I was holding off on buying one of these until I saw some of the other colors. I haven't seen a Fawn one on the lounge yet, but it looks like my options in size 7 are running out. I was thinking of buying the Fawn size 7 that's listed on the Hats-Plus website. Does anybody have an example of Biltmore's fawn?

Josh,

I wanted one of these too but they were out of my size. They sent me an email stating that the Biltmore Pinch Hat was the same hat except they had creased it. They said they had one of those in my size and asked if I wanted it. So I have one in Fawn on its way. Once I get it I'll post some pictures but the Pinch Hat is an option for those who can't get the open crown model.

That Pinch model has a similar Product ID to the Fawn Open Road that I got = BWF2008 where mine is BWF2001.
Looking forward to what you get Mike...

I look forward to seeing that as I have the impression that the Pinch is tapered and apparently may have quite a bit of stiffener as well so changing the bash/crease may not be so easy.

I ended up getting the Wilderness Open Road in black even though I would have preferred Caribou or Fawn because of the above. Maybe you can talk me into getting a Pinch after I see yours.

Alan, that 7X is a stunner, renovated or not.

Great find Lizard, looks very good on you.

Dano, I didn't know that was a Playboy until I got it. She had pics of the inside but none showed the markings well enough, although the ribbon is the right mid-size for a PB. Lucked out on that one.

Hatophile, with a wife who bids on hats for you--with such great success at that--you might want to change your signature. :)

Stetson Clear Nutria

c. 1920s black furry Stetson with dress proportions - 5 1/2" crown, 3" brim. Apologies for the quality of these first pictures. Very soft, light and flexible felt with a fur finish that is somewhat finer and shorter in nap than the large Nutria Fur westerns I have. The felt is in pristine condition. The ribbon bow is set to the front. By the quality of the attachment, I am quite sure this is not the original Stetson design. Perhaps a wife had the hat adapted to her tastes after her husband passed? Was it the original ribbon to the hat? This I don't know. I have removed the few stitches holding the bow to the hat and will work on refashioning it with the bow to the side in the spirit of this early western. The Fray sweatband is shiny, rolled edge also in very fine condition. Whatever the Fray process was, it resulted in a sweatband for the ages. You can see the mark where a round size label once adhered back by the sweatband bow.

More pictures to follow in the historic Stetson thread - but which one? Dress hats or western hats?...

I just got this on ebay. Supposedly a Stetson though the stamping on the brim is done pretty badly and makes me think it might be fake. The color is a dark blue and the ribbon is quite nice although not sure if its original. The felt is very soft and pliable as well. It was a good price so I'm not complaining but if anyone can give me any info I'd appreciate it.

Welcome to the Lounge Lizard (wish I picked that for my handle here) and congrats on finding the lid you desired. The more time you spend here the more your desire may change unfortunately :)

Lauro, it's not a fake, just a modern Setson with the price cutting features that differentiate them from vintage. Thinner sweat, non-embossed markings. The liner is also the modern type. Not a bad hat, just not an old hat.

Alan, you have a real nose for sniffing out the early Stetson and no different here. Nice "2 SOFT" sweat too. Please enlighten me on meaning of "The Fray" sweatband, I'm too lazy and inept at searching here for it.

Alan that is a true treasure!
Lauro that is a more recent Stetson offering, but looks nice.
Aaron, unfortunately my wife does not bid for me, I was referring to the seller. Nonetheless I most certainly would not give up my gal for a hat (most of the time).

Lauro13, you can give a call to Bencraft for more information... they are still in business and Besdor is a Lounge members here as well.

Thank you Perry and Mike. Mike, the 2 refers to the width of the sweatband I believe. More information on The Fray here. It's a good read.

Alan, that's an amazing hat - probably the best I've seen on ebay from that era. I don't know what I would have done if it had been in my size - heck, it might have gone for $400+ !!!

Congratulations. As far as dress or western - I don't know. If the ribbon is original, it's dress, but I've seen that body design and plush felt on some old westerns. I would have to dig through my archive drive to see how the label compares to western vs dress - Dinerman could probably tell you quickly if he sees this.

Agreed. Amazing hat. I'd put it in the dress thread. That felt looks so nice. Did you steam it yet?

I agree regarding 'dress', but I'm trying to be open-minded...for a change :)

Not to stray off-topic too much, but when you get hold of a really dirty, dusty hat, do you always steam it after brushing? Does that help? I just scrubbed and brushed the heck out of one, but haven't steamed it.

Vacuum a lot, then brush, then maybe vacuum and brush again. Then steam it.
