Possible sticky -how to measure a jacket

Hi all,
As a relatively new member here who is still developing an understanding of these great jackets, I am regularly struck by how differently some people actually go about measuring them.
There seems to be numerous posts to the effect of "it was advertised as having a pit to pit of 23", yet was actually 1" less / more...."
I have searched & and have not been able to find a one page post which outlines the 'Gold Standard' on how to measure a jacket.
The sleeves seem to be the most challenging as there are a few ways that they CAN be measured, whilst I expect there's only one way that they SHOULD be measured.

As an idea, does anyone else think there's value in having one of the more respected members, or even a representative from a manufacturer, creating a single page post with photos outlining the 'Fedora Lounge Gold Standard' method of measuring a jacket?
This would then be placed as a permanent sticky on the forum?

I seem to remember Andy from BK posted a very good 'how to' on jacket measuring with photo illustrations.

While it might be useful I find the number of 'stickys' at the moment seems a bit over to top - will only take a few more and we will have to go to page 2 to read new posts :)

Ultimately though I can see it helping when people buy things elsewhere and the measurements aren't as expected?

How many people actually use the stickies we currently have though?

Half of the images in the 1942 catalogue sticky don't even work now.....why is that still there?

I think a single post like the one on VLJ would help a lot more people than some of the rather specialised stickies we have that only cover one very specific interest.

Thanks all for the thoughts so far.

Sloan; did you have the link to Andy's post?
Nick123; I agree with sourcing information from all relevant sources to validate an idea, but surely a resource such as TFL could be self sufficient and not require members to cross reference other forums?
ProtienNerd; good point.
Fanch, that is pretty much what I was thinking, thanks for posting that.

Back to the key question though, should this be made into a single page post that is readily accessible by any member, rather than relying on trolling through hundreds of pages of knowledge?

Please keep in mind that this is just a question posed for the broader consideration of the lounge members, in the spirit of enhancing what is already a brilliant resource.
I know I would benefit from this clarification & instruction, surely others might.

Nick123 and I were both referencing the same article posted by Platoon in the VLJ, whom I'm pretty certain is Andy Falzon. Since not all TFL members are also members of VLJ, I decided to reference Jeff M's post for easy reference and nothing else. In any case, credit should go to Platoon/Andy Falzon for clear and detailed instructions on how all of us should measure jackets.

The referenced sleeve measurement approach will yield spotty results if the shoulder width isn't taken into account. I have sleeves measuring 24-25.5 measured in the correct way that fall exactly to the same point above the wrist. Better to measure it like a dress shirt.

Simple solution: Put "How to Measure" in the Lounge Guides. We would all know where it is, and it wouldn't take more room at the top of the Outerwear Section. PC.

There is no one standard how jackets should be measured so not just the customers but also the manufacturers measure them in their own ways. When You buying jacket on-line it is very helpful to have some well made visual guide how to get the proper measurements. For instance, the back length and shoulder spam at Alexander Leathers are not determined the same way as they do it at Bill Kelso.

Well, I re-checked the measuring guide at AL website (http://www.alexanderleathers.com/information-menu/how-to-order.html). Shoulder to shoulder distance is measured in a way that tape comes quite close to Your neck and not in the shortest way inbetween the shoulders. Anyway, I think that this variation is not so important.

The back length measurement is determined from the middle of neck height to the desired end of a jacket. So, their back length takes into account also the colar height. Recently, I got the Arkansas in black goat from there and to get desired 27.5' back as measured by Platon, I have to request for an 1 inch longer jacket.
