I'm too inexperienced with fedoras to vote, that will be for another time, but I seem to be drawn towards medium widths, with my primary considerations being anywhere from about 2 1/4 to 2 1/2.

Size hat><size brim=style hat

I believe that hats more than 59 till 64, must be fixed with brims from 21/2 till 3 depend style hat. The small sizes than 58 looks better with 23/4 brim and under. I like the brims with 3" and more in western styles. It is my point of view.

I've found that 1 3/4 to slightly under 2 with a crown in the 4-4 41/2 range worked best for me. I just got into wearing fedoras and have picked up 3 so far. 2 Dobbs and a Borsolino. I think brim size had alot to do with ones facial features and what one is comfortable with. It took a bit of trial and error to find what worked for me. I just didn't look good in a wider brimmed hat. This site was alot of help.

Thanks for the welcome. Someday I'll try to post photos. I will have to say that this site was invaluable in picking a hat. I play poker and saw someone wearing one and spent alot of time here researching. I had originally bought a lower price wool hat and glad I stepped up to fur. While I intended to only buy one I ended up with 3. Common story here. Its funny because my Grandfather always had a fedora and cigar and I've picked up both habits.

In general it's true that 1/8 of an inch can make a really big difference.

But for some 2 3/8 and 2 1/2 might look very similar. They may look more alike than would (for example) 2 1/8 contrasted with 2 1/4 (or 2 5/8 contrasted 2 3/4).

Here's a possible theory. While you are in your sweet area you can play a bit. Once you are out of your sweet area every 1/8 inch can make a big difference (since it can push you right out of your comfort zone).

Additionally, just how strongly small increments can strike you can also depend on the overall proportions of the particular hat in question.
