Rick does do a great job. Love my chocolate and looking forward to another one this fall. Great hat you have!

Happy Friday everyone. I am pretty pleased today, as I received my hat from Rick yesterday. I have to say that this is a very nice hat, and one can't beat the price. It is a very thin felt and has a soft feel to it. It is a nice silverbelly color. I look forward to wearing it a lot! I'd like to thank Rick @humanshoes for his time and trouble making this hat. I think I owe a shout out and thanks to Brent @deadlyhandsome for having started this thread, as I would have never known of Phoenix Hats!

Thank you sir. I think Rick is staying quite busy making hats. He is several months behind. I will say that his hats are worth the wait.

Yes, he does stay quite busy, but I suspect it is not all hat-making. ;) He also does leather work, woodwork, makes custom hatting tools, makes or restores musical instruments and plays the same... And those are just the endeavors I know about, besides working a full-time job where he makes a positive difference in many peoples lives. I get the impression he could do about anything he sets his mind to. He is a talented and interesting fellow, yet he still has time to patiently go over my hat orders and turn out the exact hat I have asked for. I've dealt with several custom hatters over the last few years, but have come to consider Rick a long-distance friend. I have always been very pleased with his work.

Isn’t it strange how that happens? I’ve never even spoken to Rick on the phone, but I count him as a friend. He certainly does have a lot of irons in his fire. For me I started a couple years ago when I bought one of his rounding jacks; a beautifully made piece of equipment. I’ve never been disappointed with any of the custom hats or tools Rick has made for me.

Thank you fellas for all the kind words. I can't adequately express what your collective friendship has meant to me. My hat making journey has been, far and away, less about the hats than it has been about the people under them and I'm grateful to have gotten to know all of you.
I was recently feeling a bit overwhelmed (translation:lazy) and was commiserating (translation:whining) to Brent about the pitfalls of a busy life when I remembered what an old mentor once told me. "Never cry hunger with a loaf of bread under your arm."

Is there a winchester felt color that is equivalent to stetson's cornhill?

Anyone recognize this felt color? Think this was posted on the FL somewhere but not sure if its a stetson, vintage or custom or what?

I’ll take a look at my cornhill compared to some of Winchester’s colors tonight.

Could the dark gray with blue tones be Winchester’s “steel?”

Based on what appears on my monitor it looks to be an equivalent to Winchester's Blue Steel. It is a grey with very strong dark blue tones. I have two of them.
