This Beaver/Mink in Whiskey was almost finished before belfastboy and I determined it wasn't going to make the cut. I decided to go ahead and trim it out with my homemade tri-color ribbon. Sometimes the shoemaker does get new shoes, but only if nobody else wants them.

Wow! That hat looks great! The ribbon is truly outstanding too. If you have the chance, I’d love to see some natural light photos too...ideas for a future hat. ;)

Shoot, I like that!

Something amiss with the felt?
Thanks Tuk. Nothing wrong with the felt per se. Even though I ordered a size over what I needed I still couldn't get the crown height and brim width we were looking for. I don't know if the beaver/mink bodies run to smaller dimensions as this is the first one I've worked with. We'll see when the new one gets here.

Looks good to me. I'd have no issue wearing that one out in public, Rick! Looking forward to my dual-bander this fall! (And for those ham radio operators on the lounge, a dual-bander means something much different to us!)

There just wasn't enough felt to meet my spec of 6" open crown and a 2 5/8" brim. We were about a 1/2" short. I struggled with accepting it and having the lower crown but decided (on Rick's suggestion) to wait and get the proper sized felt and get exactly what I want.
I think we made a good call on this one belfastboy. The crown is almost too short for my taste, but hey, I'm gonna wear it anyway.

I love it, Rick. Maybe make enough ribbon for two more hats?

Tell me about the felt. How does it compare to Winchester’s beaver?

Judging from this one body that I've handled, the felt seems tighter and lighter than the pure beaver and was beautiful to work with, however, it's still much stiffer than I'd like it to be. As to the ribbon, I plan to make more with different colors in two and 3 ribbon combos. Randy's getting a 2 color ribbon on his new hat later this year.

Good to know about the mink blend. I’m intrigued, but it doesn’t sound earth shattering.

The ribbon possibilities are fun to consider. I’m definitely going to want one of those; I think the three color ribbon looks great!

Special order for a large, straight-side, brass foot, oak and antler foot tolliker. Also wanted it configured to press against the crown base as well as the brim break. Dude! (says I) Do you want me to put a motor on it, too? Anyway, with a solid 1/4" brass foot plate and weighing in at a hefty 12.8 ounces, this tool should whip that felt into submission in short order.

Happy Friday everyone. I am pretty pleased today, as I received my hat from Rick yesterday. I have to say that this is a very nice hat, and one can't beat the price. It is a very thin felt and has a soft feel to it. It is a nice silverbelly color. I look forward to wearing it a lot! I'd like to thank Rick @humanshoes for his time and trouble making this hat. I think I owe a shout out and thanks to Brent @deadlyhandsome for having started this thread, as I would have never known of Phoenix Hats!

That really came out great! Rick did you proud. What dimensions did you end up with? I have a silverbelly on order too but I haven’t settled on final specs. You certainly wear yours well; that style really suits you.

Thank you Brent. It is right at 5 & 1/2 crown, (about 4 & 1/2 at front crease) and 2 & 3/4 brim. The color is great, a real light gray color, that I don't think my pics show. It should go with just about anything. Not sure if you are getting the dress weight or western this time, but I will tell you, this dress weight is really light. I hardly know I'm wearing it. I'm really tickled with it. Rick is such a great guy, and was real easy to deal with, but then, you already know that.
I already emailed him about getting one of his Arizona's!! I really liked the one you and Jonesy got.

I too ordered the dress-weight felt. I believe Rick already has the felt for me, but right now he has my granite on the block and I’m hoping it will ship next week.
