I have not made a final decision yet but I have a black cherrry and purple/burgundy/eggplant ribbon in Art's queue. I'll let you how it turns out. Like you, I think the purple will look great on the darker hats. Rick is working on a chocolate and burgundy for me now that should look fabulous!

I was thinking that dark purple would work well with black cherry and midnight felt, too.

That purple's a good looking ribbon color. Something like that would probably make for a nice muted contrast against a black hat. I put the original black ribbon back on this Borsalino that I refurbished and under certain light the ribbon shows its purplish undertone. Just to note: I only posted this hat here for the sole purpose of demonstrating how purple would possibly contrast against a black hat. I think that color is going to make a nice addition to Rick's ribbon offerings.

Yeah, that purple looks nice, Rick. I think it would also add a nice contrast to something lighter like Silvermist...and I think it would contrast well against various shades of gray, too. I really like that purple you ordered.
Thanks Terry! I usually have my lady friend help me out with color choices but she is laid up in New York right now. It seems I have color deficient vision in certain spectrums and sometimes I need a little help. All part of the fun.

Ha! Talk about color deficient vision! You should see the way I dress sometimes! My wife's like, "Terry, I'm not going anywhere with you dressed like that." So, I don't get dragged off to the store and have to follow her around and hold her purse while she shops. There's a lot to be said for wearing stripes and checks together too!

A humorous story about a colour deficient guy that decided to dress all in black.....thought he had it beat and was so proud of his solution until the first time his wife gave him hell because his 'blacks' did not match. He threw in the towel a defeated man......if you have to match your shades of black then there truly is NO hope.

This definition from colourblindawareness.org:
"People with deuteranomaly and protanomaly are collectively known as red-green colour blind and they generally have difficulty distinguishing between reds, greens, browns and oranges. They also commonly confuse different types of blue and purple hues."
So, guess what I am. Sorry Brent.

Of course, you know you're a lucky man to have a good woman in your life to keep you sartorially correct. I once bought a pair of blue jeans that fit me perfectly and I loved. I was wearing them in the grocery story one day and a woman commented, "I love your purple jeans". Needless to say, I never wore them again.

I purchased this ribbon from Etsy seller EarthGatherings2 and I believe I got her last 16 yards, but it wouldn't hurt to check. I hope it's as nice as the picture makes it look.
I found another 8 yards so I purchased it. Thank you for sharing the seller info. That deep purple is fantastic and reminds me of the old dye black cherry hat bodies.

Yep good eye, 3" brim, raw edge. To my eye the crown is 4 1/2" front and back, topping out at about 5 1/4" at the the back of the front pinch. The felt is 50/50 beaver/rabbit in a fairly stiff western weight (I think), with a vintage Greyblock ribbon in beige. I did not spec out any detail I just asked Rick to make me a hat. I'd say he nailed it.
I'm smiling.

Indeed, you have good reason to smile - that is one fine looking hat!

Disclaimer: I asked for a dark plum ribbon and matching binding. I know there are differences in how people see colors and even more in how monitors display them. This is just one of the hazards of long distance custom hats. Making sure you and the hatter are using the same words to describe the same thing is paramount. I was looking for something muted and a purple almost black color, and I thought that was how everyone thought of “plum.” My fault. Rick has graciously offered to replace the ribbon. I’m going to give it a day or two to decide, but I laughed out loud when I first opened the box...not the reaction I was hoping for.

In every other way it’s an outstanding hat. There is no blame for Rick and I’ve learned a lesson I thought I already knew.

Maybe be a Prince tribute hat? In any case, I really like the dark moss beaver fur felt.

I kind of want to keep it as is, but I know it wouldn’t get any use and such a fine hat needs to be worn. It really is a beautifully made hat.

Wow, that's a pretty bold contrast but still a fine looking hat! I'm curious, though... is that the same ribbon that you posted the picture of back in February?:

If it is the same ribbon, then it only proves out one of my fears that you can't really tell what you're looking at until you see it in person. There is no way I would think those ribbons are the same (Not that I don't trust Rick implicitly - I don't mean to imply he would switch them). Those colors just look SO different from either other in the two pictures.

I'm really happy that the last hat Rick made me based on a picture did, indeed, turn out just like the picture. It is now my favorite "casual" hat. And there is no doubt in my mind that Rick will get you all fixed up on this one!

Yes, the two photos are of the same ribbon. Lighting and other issues come into playas well as monitor/screen settings and the differences in how we each perceive color. I don’t think there is an easy solution and it’s part of the risk assumed by long distance orders. Of course, Rick wants his customers to be happy with their hats and these are things that can be fixed

Wow! It certainly is a pop of color. If nothing else you could go around telling riddles while wearing it.

In all seriousness though, it still is a handsome hat to be sure.

Yes, lighting and different computers make a big difference, as does the way modern cameras "adjust" the colors and light balance when the picture is taken. I've bought several pieces of vintage grosgrain ribbon that look nothing like I expected, and now will only buy if the seller is willing to send me a small "swatch" sample first. And how many times have you seen someone's description of the hat say something like, "It is more brown than it appears in the picture"?

But even then, our eyes "adjust" what we see depending on the background; a small piece of a certain color looked great, but then the whole ribbon just doesn't look the same color when it's wrapped around the hat. And then there's colors like, say, granite felt that depend on ribbon color or even surroundings for their "hue" that day, never mind the difference between indoor and outdoor light. And this granite batch is a slightly different shade than the last one the manufacturer sent... (I have granite on the brain since my next hat from Rick will be granite, but it is a tough color to pin down so I thought it would be a good example.)

And then, as you say, there's always the subjective factor - "That's not black, that's dark blue!" Or, "Is this more blue or green?"

Lots of challenges, indeed, that all hat makers and buyers face. I will say, though, that almost always, even if the colors are somewhat (or a lot ;) different), the hats look better in person than they do in pictures!

Have a good day,
Regan
