What a great hat, love the proportions. Is it a 3" brim ...bound or raw edge?
Yep good eye, 3" brim, raw edge. To my eye the crown is 4 1/2" front and back, topping out at about 5 1/4" at the the back of the front pinch. The felt is 50/50 beaver/rabbit in a fairly stiff western weight (I think), with a vintage Greyblock ribbon in beige. I did not spec out any detail I just asked Rick to make me a hat. I'd say he nailed it.
I'm smiling.

The hat looks great on you jonesy! Just at home in the islands as it would have been in Santa Fe. I can only shake my head at the 27 day shipping time, but I'm glad it finally got there.

Thanks Rick, I am tempted to wear it to the beach. LOL!
I read an article in the local paper recently about how the produce managers at all of the grocery stores on the Island had severe shortages of product recently because the barges that are used to ship things here could not sail for much of the winter due to the unusually stormy winter. They chose to pay more than 3 times the usual shipping cost to fly what produce that they could get instead.
And just about the same time that my Arizona showed up, I noticed lots of strawberries from CA on the shelves. :)

Thanks @ Rmccamey
I'm just going to have to throw on my Lucchese boots, my new hat, and drive down to the local surfer beach, and back my Prius into a spot with all the guys tailgating in their pickups. :)

Wheat Milan or natural hemp straw would work on a tropical island wouldn’t they?

That's pretty much all I wear on this tropical end of the landmass (north of no south, to give it a Bukowski spin). Piece of advice: carry a plastic bag with you in case of one of those surprise downpours. Oh, and really nice Phoenix!

Disclaimer: I asked for a dark plum ribbon and matching binding. I know there are differences in how people see colors and even more in how monitors display them. This is just one of the hazards of long distance custom hats. Making sure you and the hatter are using the same words to describe the same thing is paramount. I was looking for something muted and a purple almost black color, and I thought that was how everyone thought of “plum.” My fault. Rick has graciously offered to replace the ribbon. I’m going to give it a day or two to decide, but I laughed out loud when I first opened the box...not the reaction I was hoping for.

In every other way it’s an outstanding hat. There is no blame for Rick and I’ve learned a lesson I thought I already knew.

Maybe be a Prince tribute hat? In any case, I really like the dark moss beaver fur felt.

I kind of want to keep it as is, but I know it wouldn’t get any use and such a fine hat needs to be worn. It really is a beautifully made hat.

Did you go with a short hair finish on this one, Brent?

I'm still hoping for a nice dark moss fedora in my future.

I think I know what you were going for with the dark plum.

I was wondering how that would look on dark moss, and granite felt, too.

I have a granite on order too and we are currently choosing the ribbon. My granite Gannon has a charcoal ribbon that is versatile, but a bit boring.

I didn’t specify the finish on the dark moss, but it does have a longer(ish) texture. I like it, and I noticed it right off.

I think I’ll procure my own ribbon for the dark moss as it really isn’t fair to expect Rick to be able to see into my mind.

That's what I get for buying ribbon labeled plum and just going with it. My bad. No worries though, we'll get it changed out for you. It's the first hat I've taken back so I guess my batting average is still pretty good. I have this vintage dark purple on order and we'll see how it looks. I don't have any matching brim binding yet, but I do love the search. You probably know by now that if it fit me I'd make you another from scratch and keep this one just for fun. Hah!

That purple's a good looking ribbon color. Something like that would probably make for a nice muted contrast against a black hat. I put the original black ribbon back on this Borsalino that I refurbished and under certain light the ribbon shows its purplish undertone. Just to note: I only posted this hat here for the sole purpose of demonstrating how purple would possibly contrast against a black hat. I think that color is going to make a nice addition to Rick's ribbon offerings.
Borsa-Hat-5-A.jpg

Yeah, that purple looks nice, Rick. I think it would also add a nice contrast to something lighter like Silvermist...and I think it would contrast well against various shades of gray, too. I really like that purple you ordered.
