Took me a minute to realize you probably meant to say "what are the colors". I'm easily confused these days. Anyway, the hat body is Sand and the ribbon is a vintage Grayblock beige. Be well Tuk

This hat just arrived, courtesy of Rick's elves. They definitely hadn't been drinking when they finished this beauty up!













This is a natural color beaver body with navy ribbon. It is a shameless copy of one Rick made a few months back, except for the size. It is a 7-3/4 hat with a 3" brim and almost 5-1/4" crown, measured at the front of the teardrop crease. Rick really came through with the tall, boxy crown that I like to balance the wide brim I prefer. The felt has a really nice, soft finish to it, although the felt itself is a little stiff because this is a mid-weight Western body to help the wide brim hold its shape. We had discussed this before, and Rick knows I like a stiffer felt than the vintage dress hats have.

I'm not a flashy dresser (no Hawaiian shirts in my closet!), so the subdued brown/gray and navy colors will really blend well with a lot of what I wear. Rick's "Trekker" hat has become my go-to outdoors hat, and I can easily see this one becoming my "casual trip to town" hat. My wife is gone with the grandkids for a quick Christmas trip, so is it wrong to wear this around inside the house to "break it in"?

This started many months ago as I was looking for someone to make me an Outlaw Josey Wales-esque hat after I was completely disappointed with a hat Staker Custom Hats made for me. Rick also liked the style and he showed a hat that was different but in the same vein; Rick has named this style the Arizona. I was hooked.

It arrived a day early and I love it. It’s made from a western hat body so it could accept the brim curl. The fit is perfect and I can’t stop grinning. The brim measures 3” with the curl so...3 1/4” before it was curled? All my other Phoenix hats were shipped open crown but I let Rick shape this hat for me and I love it. Everything about this hat is just what I wanted and Rick’s craftsmanship shines through.

My next Phoenix is a Sahara and I also have a dark moss in queue. I can’t wait!

That is one sharp hat! I like the proportions and that color combination is eye-catching. Rick makes some fine hats, and you wear it well.

Yes, mine won't be started until after the first. As I understand it, Rick had to order the felt, so he's just waiting on all the parts to come together. My birthday is Jan. 24, so I'm hoping for a nice birthday present

I have one in the queue as well. I grow more anxious with each day that passes, but I completely understand that Rick has a lot on his plate. I'd rather us all have the hats that Rick takes his time with to get the pride and craftsmanship that he puts into each hat, rather than orders being rushed through and getting a sub-par head covering made of felt. In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy seeing the fine hats he's making for the Loungers.

Hello all. New and exciting developments at the PHC this week so I thought I'd share.
My new ASM 1107-1 sweatband sewing machine from JW Hats arrived safe and sound, as did the adjustable presser foot and sweatband attachment from the Tennessee Attachment Company. I'll post more pictures when I have it all set up. I love almost everything about making hats, but I've never particularly enjoyed sewing in sweatbands by hand. It takes me more than an hour to do a proper job and I'm counting on this new machine to remove that tedious task from the equation. I've heard that there is a steep learning curve to the proper use of these machines, but that just gets me more excited to master a new skill set.
On another front, I heard from my friend in Columbia today and will be receiving a few samples of his straw hat body offerings soon. At some point, as time permits, I will be adding Milan straw, hemp, and panama hats to the lineup with the first production Milan straw slated to go to Brent (deadlyhandsome) as promised.
I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

JW's family sold the business to what appears to be a long time business manager or was somehow affiliated with the shop. He changed the name slightly, was JW Hats and is now JW Custom Hats.

Rick, I will be curious to hear how you like using the machine. Glad to see you have the correct presser foot for it, was that purchased from Tennessee Attachment too? Mine cost me a small fortune and I got it form the folks that had been manufacturing the ASM machine.

Personally I found that I don't get the stitching as close to the break line as I would like. It usually sews higher on the tape than I would like. To me also felt like it counteracts the belling of the sweat some, which I did not like. Maybe it is just me and how I am using it; your mileage may vary. When I visited Art's shop a year ago he preferred to sew the sweat in by hand even though he has a vintage Singer 107 for putting the sweat in. I just put a sweatband in the other day I did that one by hand. I have two more hats lined up and I will give the ASM machine another, maybe I just need to do some adjustments.
