I’ve been playing around with a couple ideas on how to add an accent to my Arizona to adapt it to my island home.

I think this is a keeper:

Puka and cowry shell, red coral, and turquoise.

On rare occasions I get an order for a hat that allows me to throw caution to the wind and really have some fun with the craft. The kind of hat build where perfection is the opposite of the ultimate goal. When the young man in California asked me to recreate the "Ellsworth" hat my first question was "WHY?!". I told him that I thought it was a just a beat up, wonky looking hat that I probably wouldn't want to be seen wearing in public (how's that for great salesmanship?), but he stood his ground and told me that's exactly what he wanted. Hey, who am I to argue? I loved the HBO series Deadwood and was in awe of most of the character's hats, however, not so much the one Jim Beaver's character wore. Regardless of my feelings, I dove right in and did my best to stay true to the spirit of the hat, right down to the mattress ticking fabric hatband. Now I have to admit that, not only was it great fun to make, it's definitely grown on me and I'll miss it when it's gone. Who'd a thought?

The hat looks nice, but I think you lost me at “mattress ticking fabric hatband.” You’re not going to get all Nick Fouquet on us, are you?

Not to worry Brent. I did try to stay true to the original, but underneath that removable fabric hatband is a nice 1" grosgrain ribbon with a frayed end bow treatment. Two hats for the price of one. So, who's this Nick guy? Is he a hat maker? ;)

Jonesy, I think you could make a nice concho-like hatband with repos of Hawaiian coins. I used to have one of the copper pennies. I think that would look sharp, be unique to the setting & stay true to the style of the hat. JMO.

Thanks HJ, that is a great idea. I have some friends in New Mexico who used to do silver, but I’m going to try and find someone to make a Hawaiian coin concho.

Here ya go Ryan. Last pic is without the funky mattress ticking hatband. I had to know that there is a decent hat underneath there somewhere.

How goes the Milan hatting? Please let us know when that venture is up and running.

I thought I had my Milan bases covered, but then I saw Randy’s latest and I want one of my own. Thanks his place is dangerous that way.

I wish I had the time to make straws Brent, as I really enjoy doing it, but I've been up to my a** in fur felt and saw dust lately. Also, it remains to be seen whether or not my straw hat apprentice has the same level of persistence and dedication to the craft that I do. It is not a process I would recommend for the impatient, unfocused, or easily frustrated. On the bright side, my semi-retirement is eight short months away so, one way or the other, I will definitely be rolling out the straw line before the summer of 2020. Thanks for your continued interest and support my friend. I'll definitely keep you all posted.

As I said previously, let me know what hat you are going to make for me and when, no rush, happy to wait.
