Philosophical: Are (good) books "cobblestones" of life?

For me books in general are very much companions. My book or ereader never very far away and I never leave home without one. I am however a fickle friend in that once read a book is discarded very likely never to be opened and read again. There are so many books and so little time that other than a very few, once read they are never to be read again. They do in a sense, live forever in my memory. The images conjured in the reading become part of me.

Good books (and some not so good) have been my constant companion since I learned to read. I get more enjoyment from reading than watching and the scenes and colors projected in my mind tend to be more vibrant than what I view on a screen. The demise of widespread reading by the public is a sad thing to me.
