Philip Marlowe starrring...CLIVE OWEN?

From Cinematical.com:

Producer Marc Abraham told Louisville, Kentucky's Courier-Journal that he will be following up Children of Men with another collaboration with Clive Owen that will be based on one of Raymond Chandler's detective stories. He didn't specify which story would be adapted, but he did say that Owen would be playing Marlowe.

Do we like this? I think Owen would be great if he can master an "American" accent. Let's hope it will be period.

Oh, Clive Owen is fantastic. He did a very believable Yank accent in "Sin City." The guy's a terrific actor. I'm really looking forward to this now!

This could be really good. I hope it's one of the books that wasn't made into a movie before. Can it really compete with Bogie in The Big Sleep? Maybe another book that was really good, like Farewell, My Lovely. That was a really good book. Hell, if he can pull off the accent and they don't get too heavy in the way they portray the 40s it can be good. And as long as they get the noir style down right.

Hold on there, Jay. "Farewell, My Lovely" was made into the excellent and underseen "Murder, My Sweet" with Dick Powell in the lead. Yes, that Dick Powell. "42nd Street" and "Gold Diggers of 1933" Dick Powell. But he's actually a very good Marlowe, and maybe even a little truer to Chandler's Marlowe than Bogie.

From other things coming out about the project it looks like it might be another adaptation of The Big Sleep or Farewell, My Lovely. I think they want to make it a series so they are starting at the beginning.

It seems every other decade or so, we get remakes of those two books. Robert Mitchum did a great version on Farewell, and a totally AWFUL update of The Big Sleep back in the late 70's.

I think The Big Sleep would be the better remake since they could be more faithful to the seedier parts of Chandler's story. The Bogart version had to avoid all of that because of the Code. Not that Owen could replace Bogart - at least he is an adult actor and not some punk kid who will talk about bringing a modern-day attitude to an old story.

Thanks, Dan - "Murder, My Sweet" is a big favorite of mine. Dick Powell really hit it as radio detective Richard Diamond, which is the best series I've ever heard. I bought MMS sight-unseen simply because he was in it and I love Philip Marlowe anyway. My gamble paid off in a big way.

Glad to have your back on that one, Sunny.

Personally, I hate when Hollywood remakes classic movies not so much because I think it's a blasphemy to reinterperate or anything, but mostly because I hate that for the next five years or so, whenever I mention a movie (say, "King Kong" or some such), people automatically assume I mean the new one. Oh well. I just hope it winds up being a quality movie.

That's a big hate of mine, too. At least when I talked about "The Shop Around the Corner" people don't think of Meg Ryan. They just don't think of anything. lol

You have a terrific avatar, by the way. There's all too little Cagney-appreciation around here. :eusa_clap

If anyone could pull it off it would be Clive Owen.
I have found time after time his work to be very solid...even
if perhaps the film itself may not be. He is dedicated to his craft.

I too hope it's a good adaptation.

I really enjoyed him as King Arthur. I think he may be able to pull this off, but he is still no Bogey. I believe a remake of the Big Sleep would be great and I would give Clive a chance to see how he does. I just hope that it is a period piece and not revamped for todays time.

I vote for Lady in the Lake. A book on par with some of Marlowe's other journeys, yet not made into a great film yet like The Big Sleep, Farewell My Lovely or The Long Goodbye.

I apologize to anyone who has seen either of the first two Lady of the Lake movies and liked it. Because I didn't.

And the 1975 Mitchum Farewell, My lovely is gold! Maybe it ain't as good as Murder, My Sweet, but still, gold!

Clive Owen is one of favourite actors, he will have no problem at all playing Marlowe......just hope the screenplay and direction comes up to scratch and it's not another Children of Men as that was, in a word CRAP :eusa_doh:

Mitchum is Phil Marlowe

Robert Mitchum Is the actor portraying Marlowe who, for me, comes closest to what I feel Chandler was trying to portray......

Bogie was a better Sam Spade than a Phil Marlowe. I thought he palyed the Big Sleep a little too inteligent and not enough of the crack wise......

Murder my Sweet was cool but too much hamming and poetic license..

The Robert Montgomery Lady in the Lake was too bizzarre ....

I wish Mitchum did Marlowe back in the 40's......think of him in Out of the Past...

That's Phil Marlowe....
