Viola Smith - The Female Gene Krupa Phantom Dancer Show 10 Dec 2013

I'll be singing the songs of the 1920s and 1930s with my band Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters (http://www.bakelitejazz.com) this Tuesday.

So I've put together an encore Phantom Dancer presentation for you on 2SER 107.3 this Tuesday 10 December at 12 noon (+11 GMT). You can also hear it online at 2ser.com (http://www.2ser.com). But it means, however, there's no play list. I can tell you though you will hear live off 1940s-1950s radio in the second half of the show, Cootie Williams, Hot Lips Page & Earl 'Fatha' Hines!

BUT - I'll make it up to you with TWO Phantom Dancer Videos of the Week.

The first, Frances Carroll & her Coquettes is a Vitaphone short from the late 1930s. The all-women band play a few Raymond Scott numbers and lots more swing beside. And the band features Viola Smith - the female Gene Krupa - on drums.

Well, Viola Smith turned 101 on 29th November 2013! And your 2nd Phantom Dancer Video of the Week is a fascinating video interview with her by Tom Tom Magazine.

Enjoy both videos on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/...-the-female-gene-krupa-1930s-vitaphone-short/

And you can hear past Phantom Dancers in this 2SER archive http://www.2ser.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&task=category&id=162

Phantom Dancer Christmas Eve Show - Women Say The Darndest Things

Season's Greeting Phantom Dancers,

It's been a busy month of live shows for Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters 1920s – 30s trio – sextet wherein I warble, or wobble, but, at last on Christmas Eve, I can get back into the 2SER studios to share some quality time with you.

As is a long tradition with The Phantom Dancer (since 1985), on the show closest to Christmas, the swing and jazz greats go a-caroling for you from their live 1930s-50s radio and TV shows.

Benny Goodman, Henry Hall and the BBC Dance Orchestra, Count Basie, Kid Ory, Judy Garland and many more will all come wassailing through your radio from their own vintage Christmas radio shows just for you.

Tune in. Christmas Eve. Tues 24 December, 12 noon AEDT (+11GMT) 107.3 2SER Sydney and online. See the play list and a Video Of The Week for you – a send-up of a classic 50s TV concept – 'Women Say The Darndest Things' - on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/...om-dancer-show-women-say-the-darndest-things/ .
Merry Christmas!

Laurel and Hardy, Alvino Rey, Phantom Dancer 7 Jan 2014

It's the first Phantom Dancer of 2014 this Tuesday for you on 107.3 2SER Sydney and online. Swing and jazz from live 1920s-60s radio and TV.

There's a whole 15 minute broadcast for you by electric guitar pioneer Alvino Rey from 1944.

And, an album! From back in the days when an album was an album. When an album looked like a photo album book with brown pages that were actually sleeves containing 78 rpm records. Unlike Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters' latest album Sweet Sue which is a clutter-free digital artefact you can download from Bandcamp http://gregpoppletonandhisbakelitebroadcasters.bandcamp.com/. (What a plug! But it's a doozy of a swing album)

Now back to the album, it's Victor's New Years Eve In New York waxed by the Victor Symphony Orchestra in 1929. Read all the details here http://victor.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/matrix/detail/800025335/CVE-53484-New_Years_Eve_in_New_York.

And for your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week. Also from 1929 – Laurel and Hardy – the hilarious 'A Perfect Day.' Enjoy on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/01/06/a-perfect-day-short-film-laurel-and-hardy-1929/. And tune in next Tuesday or listen online at 2SER.com

Mildred Bailey 'Rock It For Me' (1938)

Hello Phantom Dancers,

This Tuesday I'll be singing with my 1920s and 1930s jazz swing band, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters, ( http://www.bakelitejazz.com ) at a Tea Dance. So I can't be in the studio to bring you The Phantom Dancer this week from 12 noon - 2pm.

Instead, please enjoy a special ENCORE PRESENTATION! That's commercial TV talk for REPEAT! You can hear it online, Tues 18 March, 12 noon - 2pm (+11GMT) at http://www.2ser.com and over 107.3 2SER Sydney.

But I do have a whole, new Phantom Dancer Video of the Week for you. Mildred Bailey sings 'Rock It For Me' from 1938 (with Red Norvo on vibes) - allegedly the first song to use the word 'Rock 'n' Roll' as a kind of music. Baby, baby, baby, whoa-oa-yeah!

Hear it on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/...ck-n-roll-on-record-phantom-dancer-18-mar-14/

Phantom Dancer 1 Apr 2014 - Ben Pollack Short

Your April Fools Day Phantom Dancer makes no reference to April Fools Day at all. Because as I was told by my friends in primary school, April Fools doesn't work after 12 noon. And The Phantom Dancer goes to air at 12 noon, 107.3 2SER, Tuesday 1 April. Online http://www.2ser.com

Check out the April Fools' Day play list and your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week: Ben Pollack and his Park Central Orchestra, on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/...estra-short-1929-phantom-dancer-tues-1-april/

The Ben Pollack clip features this amazing combination, and I quote form YouTube,
"In the band are Jimmy McPartland, Ray Bauduc, "Icky" Morgan, 19 year old Benny Goodman, brother Harry Goodman and Jack Teagarden who not only plays trombone but also sings in his own inimitable way and even plays vibraphone. The Ben Pollack Orchestra plays three tunes "California Echoes", "My Kind Of Love" and "Song Of The Island"." Enjoy

This Is The BBC (1960) Phantom Dancer 8 Apr 2014

What a show this week. By request, a replay of the Benny Goodman Orchestra's version of The Hucklebuck from Surf Beach, Virginia. Les Paul and George Barnes play their electric guitars. Fairchild and Carroll tinkle their dual pianos.

This week's Video of the Week, 'This Is The BBC' released in 1960. A day in the life of BBC radio and TV. The big news story, 'The Russians have launched another Moon rocket.' For morning music, 'Mrs Ada Spillington of Suffolk would like some jolly music.' Don't we all. Midday music features the brilliant BBC Northern Dance Orchestra.

See the play list full of swing and jazz from live 1920s – 60s radio and TV and this week's Vid of the Week at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/this-is-the-bbc-1960-phantom-dancer-8-apr-2014/
