Spike Jones All Star Review TV 1952

For those of you who follow the blog and are thinking, 'Where's last week show?'. Well, it went to air, but it was a postmodern pastiche Phantom Dancer of two classic shows, highly self-referential and highly amusing, no doubt. I had to pre-record as I was singing for a Tea Dance with Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters, 1920s-30s jazz and swing that afternoon

This week – a whole new Phantom Dancer for your listening and dancing pleasure on 107.3 2SER, online and digital radio. See the play list, Phantom Dancer Video of the Week (Spike Jones) and air times on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013/03/25/spike-jones-all-star-tv-review-1952/

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead

Play List 12 Noon Tues 16 Apr, 6pm Sat 20 Apr 2013 107.3 2SER Sydney and 2SER.com

Salutations Phantom Dancers,

Of course this week's show has a version of 'Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead'

But we're a cut above the rest

We'll be playing the live Glenn Miller swing version with Marion Hutton singing over WEAF New York in 1939. Make sure you tune in. What makes this version special? Marion obviously doesn't think much of the song!

And since the famous song is from The Wizard Of Oz, this week's Video Of The Week is a Command Performance USA film clip of Oz star, Judy Garland, singing the most famous song from the film, 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'. And Bob Hope's in there, too. Enjoy! It's on the Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013/04/13/ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead/

The Last Saturday Night Phantom Dancer

Hello Phantom Dancers,

There are big changes afoot.

Firstly, this Saturday's show will be the last.

After six years of being heard twice a week on 2SER, the show will now be heard just once weekly – every Tuesday at the same time since the late 1990s – 12 noon.

But, instead of being a 90 minute show on Tuesday, it'll be 2 hours from next week, 12 noon – 2pm.

And, sometime this year, and I don't know when as yet, you'll be able to hear The Phantom dancer any time you want on the 2SER website.

And now for this week's Phantom Dancer Video of the Week, Vitaphone's latest news on Hollywood from 1934. Enjoy with this week's play list on the Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013/04/21/the-last-saturday-phantom-dancer-this-week/

Chinese Swing From 1946

June in January greetings to you Phantom Dancers. This Tuesday’s show is sterling. Well it does have a radio transcription by Sterling Young’s Orchestra. There’s also music by Dick Freeman and his Trocadero Dance Band in Sydney (1940) and live radio featuring pop stars Jimmy Dorsey, his brother Tommy, and Glenn Miller. And the final set from last week’s Phantom dancer gets carried over because we ran out of time on last Tuesday’s show.

And this week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week is a blues by Chinese jazz and blues singer, Bai Hung, recorded for Pathe in 1946. The music itself is good. The film is lousy.
See for yourself with this week's play list on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog - http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013/06/09/swing-blues-from-1946-china-bai-hung/

Dorothy Donegan 1945 Film Clip

Hi-Ho Phantom Dancers,

A long-time listener has emailed phantomdancer@2ser.com with a request. He wanted a set on MC Ernie ‘Bubbles’ Whitman, host of AFRS’ Jubilee series. So Set 2 in the Phantom Dancer play list is this week’s highlight, a Jubilee set with the best of Ernie’s jive talk and featuring all women headliners – The International Sweethearts Of Rhythm, Rose Murphy, Dorothy Donegan and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

And the Phantom Dancer Video of the Week is a clip from ‘Sensations Of 1945′ featuring the amazing Dorothy Donegan on the piano.

Read the play list, see the video at Greg Poppleton's radio Lounge - http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013/06/15/dorothy-donegan-1945-swing-piano-film-clip/

Stan Kenton and Shep Field On The Air

I hope you enjoy it. See the songs I'll be playing for you on the play list on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog.

And your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week this week is a complete broadcast by Shep Fields and his Rippling Rhythm Orchestra over NBC from KANS Witchita Kansas, 11 July 1955 - also on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013/06/22/stan-kenton-and-shep-fields-on-the-air/ - Happy listening!
