A petticoat is underwear, it's not meant to hang out below your skirt.

It annoys me soooooooooooo much when I see petticoats hanging out the bottom of dresses.

I don't have a huge amount of success with petticoats myself, though. They have an unfortunate tendency to make my behind look enormous. *it already is enormous!* *shhh! I mean MORE enormous*

In defence of any one who's petty coat is showing, I would also say that corsets are also undergarments or foundation wear and worn today as outer wear,
So I am a little uncertain about the logic here.
I just think you got to wear things which you comfortuble with been seen wearing,I not judging either way.

I bought a vintage swing dancing petticoat from Etsy. I love that it is soft instead of scratchy tulle, but it can be rather fluffy and it is a little on the shorter side than what most of my dresses call for.
If you buy vintage, pay attention, as you will probably have to replace or repair the elastic. Even mine, which wasn't that old, needed to be taken in because it got stretched out.

I have a vintage one and a modern one.
The vintage one is very subtle, where as the modern one is, well, not.
The only issue I have is that It's too short.... but that's my own fault for not paying enough attension when buying it. It pays to shop around I think, as they're not cheap!!
I got mine at Beyond Retro... its very soft and full at the base. Unless your dress/skirt is made of fairly stiff material I find this style can make your bottom half look like a bell. not good.

infact... here is a not very flattering picture of me and my petticoat taken the other night... not entirely sure what I am doing... "dancing" I think....

Okay, ladies - since it's been a few years since this thread was active, I have a question: where the heck do I find a not-insanely-poofy crinoline (as in, one that does not make me look like Minnie Mouse or a square dancer) for someone with a more-than-35-inch waist?

All of the ones I can find seem to fall into either the too-poofy or the too-small camps.

And yes, I can sew, but no, I will not sew anything that requires that many gathers!

This is the petticoat I have (in black). It is soft (not scratchy), and poofy-but-not-square-dancer-poofy. I wear a size 14 jeans in modern sizing, but I have a size M petticoat. They go up to XL in sizing, so this might work?

GHT wanted to share the following link with everyone about making petticoats:

I also have a pair of the lace pettipants (I call them ruffle butts) from Petticoat Junction. I wear them under my skirt/petticoat if I know I'm going to be dancing so I don't accidentally flash everyone. They're fantastic.

I've had the pettipants for at least 5 years (hand wash, line dry only), and the petticoat for 9 years, and they're both in great shape.

Another thought for you, TheLibrarian.... if you're not sure about the elastic fitting to your specific size, you could replace the elastic to fit you. The elastic in the chiffon petticoat is in a casing with an opening at one side, so it would be as easy as feeding another elastic through the casing, and fastening it (I've done this with a safety pin, but you could also sew it).
