I was just out near the Peters Brothers shop taking photos...The Flatiron Building nearby was my main subject, but I couldn't resist getting some shots of that great Peters Brothers sign.

Hey Atomic, ever been to that Branding Iron Grill? I was showing my wife the Peter Bros. pics and suggested we go up there sometime. She saw the burger sign and was all for it. I swear, she would rather have a burger than a steak most times. lol

I have yet to check out the Branding Iron, but I do intend to. I live just a few blocks away in the Electric Building. Also, my absolute favorite local indie coffee shop, the Four Star Coffee Bar out on 7th, has opened a new downtown location almost next door to the Peters Brothers and the Branding Iron, so I'll probably be spending a lot of time in that area. :)

By the way, that building across the street, on the corner, is fantastic! What's the history there?

That is Fort Worth's very own Flatiron Building, built in 1907, somewhat based on the famous Flatiron in NYC (built in 1902). It was originally an office building, and sat vacant for the last few decades in bad shape. A few years back, it was bought by a doctor named Cravens who has completely restored the building, and is planning on reopening it soon, with retail on the ground floor, lofts in the middle, and the top floor & penthouse for he and his wife.

Thanks for the info. I KNEW it looked familiar AND had that NYC feeling to it. And kudos to Dr. Cravens for having the taste and the cajones to save such a remarkable piece of architecture! More should follow said path.

New Indy Push?

I see that Peter Bros now has various custom options available for their Indy style fedoras, to include choice of soft or stiff rabbit blend felts, in addition to beaver blend and 100% beaver. I just came across this, so I don't know how long these various options have been available, but perhaps this addresses some concern over the hats being too stiff??? Additionally, perhaps with the announcements of the 4th Indy film, they will be a bit more attentive to non-Western hat orders in the hopes of garnering new business? Would love to hear anyone's recent updates in this area.

Wow, I am just now seeing that mini-flatiron building. My favorite building in NYC was the Flatiron. Always wondered what it would be like to live in an apartment right on the point.

I am sorry that I never got the opportunity to see Peters Brothers. I had planned to go to Ft. Worth in September 2005 after a visit to a dear friend in Houston -- and then along came the hurricanes.

I am glad to hear they offer softer hats, that is the only reason I might not have purchased one from them. Will have to check out their website again, though I'd rather visit the place.

Ft. Worth looks like a neat little city, plus the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame is there. Is the weather better than Houston?

I have the indy custom which I guess would be the first one they offer, the original . I know it has the reputation of being stiff but mine has softened up wonderfully and is my best hat! Pics are in the what are you wearing today thread.

I spent a couple years at Fort Hood, about 70 miles south of Fort Worth, and I found the heat and humidity oppressive. I think the temps are slightly better than Houston. My wife has a sister in Houston and we visit on occasion (hence I have some thoughts about hitting Fort Worth and Peter Bros). The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metor area has all grown together over the years and I think it has something of everything, from the not-so-nice areas that accompany a major metropolitan area to the numerous offerings that big cities always have. I've seen a few forum members from the area and I'm sure they know about some of the best places and attractions.

Fort Worth is great, not that I'm biased. :) One of the best downtowns in the country (seriously), growing reborn urban neighborhoods, voted one of America's most livable cities, second fastest growing major city in the US, and (amongst those in the know) already being heard in whispers in some circles as "the next Austin" for its growing arts & culture scene (our Cultural District's museums are outstanding, with three - the Kimbell, the Carter, and the Modern - considered some of the finest museums *in the world,* and the Cowgirl Museum being basically the only one of its kind and also great). Just don't make the mistake of lumping us in with Dallas. :)
