Pedal Cars?

BinkieBaumont

Rude Once Too Often
pedalcar.jpg

"A bit off topic, but here are pedal cars I have driven as a child the top picture is 10 year old Binkie with his 1st electric car, you had to charge the battery for a month just to get 20 minutes of cruising the sidewalks, the bottom photograph is from I would geuess as a five year old, all you can see is the steering wheel, but it was a sort of fire Chiefs Car , bright red with yellow ladders that hung on the sides, its funny, but recently the car came up at a family Luncheon, and my mother said could not understand why I wanted it so much but after I got it didn't want it, its weird but I suddenly remembered that I bumped into the sideboard in the background of the picture, and scratched it, and Mom gave me a thrashing, and I never went near the peddle car again!! that was the 1960's for you, both of us had forgotten about the whole incident "

I don't collect pedal cars, but I sure do remember the ones I had as a child. I had a yellow car that came from the S&H Green stamp store. I remember a pedal firetruck that I got for Christmas in 1958. That same year I also got a stuffed monkey named "Zippy" that I still have. One Christmas I got a red pedal tractor with a two-wheeled wagon (I still have the little wagon). Probably the one I remember the most was a three-wheeled Police motorcycle, complete with "an official looking highway patrol uniform".

Pedal-cars are awesome! I had one as a kid. It was yellow and it was a race-car and it had a really crappy handbrake that would make the thing skid about three feet before it ever made it stop.

But I loved it!

I think the classic pedal-car is the best kind of toy you can give a kid. They're so much fun. Hell, if they built adult-sized pedal-cars, I'd buy one in a jiffy!

Hi

No pedal cars, but we all had pedal tractors. I had an old John Deere, one neighbor had an International Harvester, and one of the guys in the country had both. We rode them until we were near driving age, you could set on them backwards to give yourself more leg room.

None of ours had the smoke stack still attached. Mine was at least 10 years old when I got it in 1966 or so.

Yeah everyone to the comments. I had many brothers and they liked to take things apart. Somehow one took the top off of a pedal tractor they had. I still have a scar on my knee where a piece of metal cut my leg from the thing sticking up.
We were in a small town then and they (no kidding) got the doctor drunk off of the golf course to sew my knee up.
It looks like a frankenstein stitch thing. Horrible.
My pedal car story.

I had one when I was a little kid, it was shaped like a firetruck.
Haven't thought about that in decades!

Does anyone seriously collect these? I know where some awesome ones are.
Many in one place.

Does that place have a website? I had a Garman Kidillac from 1954 untill I grew too big to fit into it. It was a white fire chief's car. I loved that thing. I'd look for one now but the price of those are totally out of sight.

I knew I had a picture somewhere. I don't have the pedal car any more, but I still have the badge. This photo must have been taken around 1960.

Very cool, Big Man! And you looked very cute as a boy. How old are you there?

Thanks.

I was five or six when that photo was taken. My Dad was Principal of the school and our house was in the middle of the school grounds (that's our house in the background and the high school building to the right). I used to "patrol" the sidewalks with that little vehicle. That was about the time the old TV show "Highway Patrol"was on, and I used to watch that show to get "inspiration" on how to stop the high school kids and give them "tickets". It was great fun growing up where I did.

I got a gold Police car for Christmas 61 I believe, it was great until I got a hold of some wrenches and took it a part, this was about the same time my brother and I played gas station and filled Dad's car with water.

I had a red, metal fire truck. It had little wooden ladders on each side. My grand parents gave it to me the Christmas after I had just turned two in November of 1957. I know people say that you can't remember things that happened when you were only twenty-five months old, but I remember getting that fire truck. I remember eating my Christmas dinner sitting in it.

I rode it for several years until the seat finally cracked in the center. You could still sit in it fine, but when you got up, it would pinch the living fire out of your behind.

I got that same kind of fire truck for Christmas, 1958. I remember mine, too. Not only did mine have the wooden ladders on the side, but I had a section of hose as well.

Hey Big Man, any chance of us seeing the police-badge that's in the photo on the previous page?

Here's a picture of the badge that went with the Police uniform I had as a child. I wish I still had the entire outfit, but the badge is all that survived the years.
