My gilfriend's parents met in France during the war. He was a GI, she was in the French Resistance. After the war they lived in Paris for about 5 years. They worked in the fim industry, dubbing English soundtracks onto French films. She then got him an entree into Oxford, where he graduated in 1951. They lived on Rue McMahon, near the Arc de Triomphe. We found it on Google Earth. He has such great stories. He still says "Oh, la la!" after 50 years. His various lacations are on our proposed intinerary for France later this year (maybe . . .)

I don't like "winged cattlecars" much myself either--having been raised around planes, I would much prefer to be the one at the controls. Trust me, airliner passengerdom isn't really flying, it's just Greyhound higher up and in 3-d. Were you flying commercial, or General Av (the little prop-jobs you see around small fields)?

Unfortunately, that was only a wisecrack--there are very few legally-transferable Vulcans, and none of the "Six Shooter" packages left to mount 'em with. Besides, FAA and USAF'd have a few things to say about the idea...

On Paris, maybe someday, provided I can find a way to buildup my patience for the legendary French snobbery. (It's a family tradition that we don't suffer fools or snobs gladly.) There are several museums I'd like to check out...

Au contraire! It's simply not true. Isolated cases, yes. But from living there, I've never met a more adoptive, warm group of people in my life. But everyone has their own experience. DISSPELL THE MADNESS!

I agree with thebadmamajama - I too have not encountered the stereotype of the obnoxious Parisian. Although I have observed that behavior as a reaction to the stereotypical "ugly American". Parisians do not like being asked for directions. And as a tourist there, I too got tired of being asked for directions. Also, it is rude, when visiting a foreign country, to expect locals to speak English. If you attempt to speak French, you will go far. And you don't need much of a vocabulary to do that. And I have no aptitude for languages.

I'm moving there in less than a month! Eek...little nervous. I'm mostly excited though, it's an inexplicably wonderful place.

Good points, y'all. My folks's experience was 2 years ending in '66 around NATO Chateauroux, right before DeGaulle pulled out of NATO, so maybe things are better--this was also a time when very militant Commies were marching/rioting in the streets in that area.

I had also assumed the first rule of international travel to be "attempt to speak the language, and be diplomatic unless and until provocation is clear and consistent."
