Panama Hat Thread

I've had this hat for quite some time, but forgot to post it here. Not a fine woven panama by any standard, but the way it was woven give it character. The quite coarse straw gives it a nice airy texture. Sized m, brim at 6,5 cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. The brim is underwelted and was then bound with the brown ribbon. No bow, just a ribbon and keeper. The English Hatter is not English at all actually, but a hat and clothing shop in the centre of Amsterdam (Heiligeweg). It's been there a long time and are still in business today; worth taking a look at if you're in the neighbourhood.

That weave makes the hat. I might need one of those... are they still in production?

Ok, I tried to understand a thread on here about weave counting but I got thoroughly confused. This is supposed to be a monticristi super fino hat from Panama Hats Direct. I understand rating is not even across the board. Can someone tell me simply how to count these weaves? I would be grateful.

Hi Steve, it's as simple as counting each stitch in a once inch line both horizontally and vertically. When counting horizontally, they align ///, when counting vertically, they zigzag

Hats tend to have more vertical weaves than horizontal. Yours appears to have 17 vertical which most would not qualify as a super fino though there are no real distinctions. The high quality cuenca I just bought is an 18x21, photo attached.

This is what I believe is another Pilgrim but unlabeled. The pug is sewn on this hat and I kinda like the color so it stays, at least for now. Again a sponge and water is all I used. I was able to get rid of surface dirt/grime and reshape.

Alas... I find myself a victim of the dreaded website definition of a term. I still like the hat and didn't pay too much for it. Thanks for the help.

Well that's what matters. I've found many companies seems to adapt quality terms to the quality spectrum of hats they offer, not where the hat sits on the quality spectrum of the general market.

Just posting a new pic of me in my new (and actually first ever!) hat giving it what's maybe a third wearing along with some detail shots and one before the ribbon was added. Brand is Homero Ortega, this is a Cuenca that has to my count a 19x21.5 weave count for a WPI slightly over 400.

I'm looking for a wide (3") brim center dent Panama but not really a fan of bleached toquilla. Would any loungers on this thread have suggestions? This Delmonico Agua is exactly what I'm looking for, price, aesthetics, quality wise but seems I'm too late. Also open to vintage pieces but they are so much harder to find.

I truly believe that the terms don't really match the hats at PHD. I ordered a Super Fino as well and I'm certain I got a Fino. I'll bet you have to order a Fino Fino to get an actual Super Fino.

I somewhat expected that when I ordered anyway and like you say, it didn't cost a fortune and I'm satisfied with the hat.

Maybe some day I'll be able to justify the price of a superb hat. If not, I can live with what I have.

The shape on this is called the "cavalier". Ordering was all done via Facebook messager, with me telling then exactly what I want, and them making it and sending pictures before requesting payment. In terms of pricing, they sent me pictures of weaves at different price points, and I picked what I wanted. This hat cost around $200. They offer many different qualities of weave at different price points for each hat, and let you choose what sort of ribbon (and hat color) you want. It was a two day process to get the details nailed down, and then about another week to receive the hat in the mail. A very efficient and easy process to be honest.

I'm right there with you Andy. I'm not sure I'll ever get my hands on a true super fino as I don't live anywhere near a place where I could look at them. I do know that I like my hat enough compared to any other panama style I have that I'd probably really like a true super fino. I'd also have to have some serious spare cash.

Good looking,I'm kinda surprised it doesn't have a tip protector with that severe crease.
