Panama Hat Thread

I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask--and please delete it if it is, but...

Hey all. I have a few Akubra fur felts and a vintage Stetson fur felt, so this isn't my first time to the rodeo--but it's summer and I'm looking for my first Panama hat. While hopefully someday soon I'll own a few Brent Black hats, I'm on a bit more of a budget right now. I certainly want a leather sweat band and can add a ribbon later if needed--however I don't believe there is a single person in Ohio that can stamp a hat. As of now I'm leaning towards Panama Hats Direct Fino grade ($155)--but would love something vintage and am open to suggestions. I might even have a friend who does leatherwork and can add a sweat band, but am unsure how that would affect sizing? I've got a 7 1/8 or 57 size noggin. Any other suggestions? I was especially swooning over this: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh9MkR8ndHT/?taken-by=moontheloon

Thanks!

Other than Panama Hats Direct, I have a few emails out to see if their hats have a leather sweat band or if that could be added, but these looked like good hats for the price point I'm at. I like everything about Berkeley Hats except for the lack of the sweat band and have seen good reviews on here of Panama Hats Direct. Anything that you would cross off the list or jump out as a great deal?

Have you considered this hat?

I have been eyeing it but if you want it I’ll pass. I do this because I got the Wormser straw you wanted.

Got this one off eBay a few weeks ago. Not wild about the ribbon but I’ll keep it as is for a bit to see if it grows on me~

Thanks all. I did end up ordering from Panama Hats Direct, so here is hoping. Did the custom option: Havana, Montcristi Fino grade, with a silk maroon band. Where is PanamaBob when you need him? Suspect those would have been much nicer quality for the money? Please still do keep an eye out for vintage ones, size 57 for me though.

Also ended up ordering one from Berkley Hats. Should be fun to compare.

New to the forum, I found it surfing the net looking for a new panama hat. I have an older Monticristi that I purchased years ago, just looking for another. After browsing through this thread it looks like buying hats could be habit forming :). A pic of my panama.

That’s a good looking hat. The minimal taper, higher crown, and medium wide brim are all just about perfect.
