I recently bought a straw hat on eBay that was listed as being a Panama in the description. I knew that it was not a real Panama when I bought it, that it was a made in USA shantung, but it was a nice hat and I knew what I’d be getting.

I mentioned this to the seller and he responded that the description was correct, as he was referring to the “weave.”

Sounded like a lot of BS to me, though I suppose it is far from uncommon. (The seller also had some other mis-described hats). Caveat emptor, I guess.

Well, it finally got here from Panama Hats Direct. Arrived packed safely. First impressions, it's very comfortable and sized just right. It looks well made, the only thing might be the inner lining seems a little cheap, not bad, just slightly cheap, but you get what you pay for and I didn't buy a $1000 hat. My only question is, I need to find out how to properly pull the front of the rim down so it looks like a classic fedora style. I love it so far.

Nice looking hat! Looks good on you. I'm glad it showed up and you're happy with it.

I agree regarding the lining. My lining and sweat band leave a little to be desired, but are OK. Like you say, it isn't a $1,000 hat, but it's worth the price.

My brim snaps down just fine, so I don't know what's up with that, but I think there are some videos on their site that show how to adjust a few things with a slight misting from a water bottle, but of course, be careful.

Looks like a fine hat to me. Liners in panama hats negate the point of a light and airy summer hat anyway, so why not take it out? As for pulling the brim down; I'd say just pull it down. The straw is not brittle, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Yup. That's how mine snaps down. Just like felt.

You can get a Panama hat from Ecuador that doesn't have a snap brim. If that's the case, you can boil some distilled water and lightly steam the top side of the front brim and then hold the brim down where you want it while it dries out. Don't get steam on the inside sweatband.

Some hats I wear down brim down, and some I leave up...

Thanks guys. I took a washcloth, dampened it with warm water, rung it out, held it on the front of brim, used a haur dryer on neutral and blew it a little. Worked for a while then returned to original position. ???

It doesn't snap. I wrote them and asked for direction. I tried a steam iron and towel for protection, we'll see how long that stays.

The Brent Black count is now up to four. Looks much better on my wife than on me. But then again all my hats do. I will wear it a few times to see if it's just a matter of me getting used to the wider brim. If not she will claim it. It came a bit snug. I'm between a 1/8 and 1/4. This is a 1/8. A little steam did the trick. I bought this out of the classifieds from @singlechange. I had a couple of extra BBB pins from two Panamas I sent to @Art Fawcett for ribbon treatments. So one of the pins now has a home.
