I am in Chicago now ... roaming around ... trying to go back in time ... wanting to see some Prohibition Era history. I went to the site of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre yesterday (which of course is now a nursing home parking lot). Today I'm going to the Fluevog store and Webster's wine bar.

Go to the Green Mill and you can sit in the same booth that Capone sat in, back in the day. The joint was owned by "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn.

The house would sell with his name attached to it. Capone was a thug, no different than the ones terrorizing Chicago today, but many people idolize him, sick fascination.

Maybe they appreciated the soup kitchens he ran during tough times...

The difference between Al's sort of businessman and "real businessmen" is that they offed the competition where "real businessmen" dream about a world where they can give their competition cement shoes. At least the thugs of the 20s and 30s had class about it and looked good while doing their thuggish activities.

And rarely in their gangland shootouts did innocent bystanders get caught in the crossfire as happens today.

Before we over glamorize them, lets not forget that one of their big money makers was the Protection Racket. I knew an older gentleman in the 60s who lived under Capone, it was pay up or something bad might happen to his barbour shop!

business is business after all that's how it goes. The black market and protection racket are lucrative businesses...
