OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I saw this listing and thought “Silver Oval? That’s a model I have not heard of before”

Then I saw this:

This Miller Bros. "Sterling Beaver" was a gift from @Michael R as well (thanks buddy!!). Not sure of the beaver content, but the gold "wallpaper" applied to the end of the box implies that it was their top-of-the-line hat. This is the second crease I've put in it and it shapes easily. The felt feels amazing.

As Michael found it:

Ran across another one of these (in 6-7/8 so I let it pass), but it did have a price tag in it … so now we know.

For anyone surfing Goodwill for project hats, Ive noticed lately that everything gets shipped Fed Ex... Personally Im tired of winning a $7.99 beater hat and then finding my only options are free instore pickup (IF I drive to Kansas City) or $35 fed ex shipping. About to the point that my future Goodwill shopping will be limited to physically shopping in the local stores... That and the last couple items I started getting nasty sounding "PAY NOW" messages if I hadnt paid in 12 hrs. This last one was won overnight and by 6am this morning there was already a "nasty-gram" wanting payment in my message box. I understand its supposed to go to a good cause but Geezzz! Theres my gripe for the day

Fed Ex just dropped a BIG box from goodwill. Hat was inside the original Stetson Box, and that was heavily padded in a big that could have held three hat boxes. Not complaining mind you... just that Im used to getting hats crammed into envelopes or small boxes. Guess Goodwill of Central Texas was out of smaller boxes lol. Kinda nice for a change! Just a Black Stetson 5x Gun Club. Hats in relly nice shape, nice and clean, and it fits! Little bit of brushing and its wearable as-is

Gripe. UPS thought their location in Italy was far enough and actual delivery was too much of a stretch. Doubt I will get to see this one. I'll get my money back, but that was not the point.

UPS is not alone though. Chronopost (France) seem to have botched this one.

I know december is busy, but these orders date from early november. Sjeesh.

Packing gripes.

From an auction house: If the brim is wider than the box — find a different box or pack it diagonally. At least the shipping was fair.

Brent Black Panama. It will recover nicely as the brim was just slightly bent on the sides.

From a Goodwill auction center:

The box (not pictured) was much bigger than the brim, but they still did this. I’m guessing the packer used to work for Chipotle.

Panama from Montecristi Custom Hat Works of Santa Fe. Hoping it will recover

Well now... this could be fun lol.

Picked up a "3x Stetson Cowboy hat" on a Goodwill auction. I guess technically thats right... its a 3x WOOL Stetson hat. Oh well. it was $7.99 and I got it as a project hat to play with. Guess now Ill get to learn something about how wool hats respond to manipulation. Not sure if it was abused, neglected, or if someone tried to do their own Avant-garde styling . At least it fits ok

Knocked some dust off, trimmed a bit of damaged edge off and steamed it up a bit on a hatblock and brim block.... Little bit better. First observation is that with wool a LITTLE steam goes a long way and gives it a mind of its own lol. At least until I figure out what to do with this poor thing, its not so embarrasing on the wall. It was ugly enough that I COULDNT leave it alone.

Guess I could always, iron the brim flat, sew on a row of dingleballs on the edge, burn a couple brands in it, and stick a big feather and kitchen match in the band... Someone on ebay might pay $1000 for a custom hat

I was pretty disappointed today when the mail lady dropped off this box today. Normally when I know there is a hat in the box it makes me smile. Today...not so much ! Folded up in this tiny little box was this poor old fedora. To add insult to injury it turns out it wasn't the hat I purchased.
* I contacted the seller and explained that if/ when they find the correct hat to please ship it in a larger box and not fold the hat up at all four corners like that. They responded with an apology and promise to ship correct hat out tomorrow in a more suitable box. We will see.
