OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Ok......WINTER IS OVER!!! And I have been out and about the last couple of weeks......
Sooooooooo, here is some of what I found. Mostly trade bait, as I seldom find my size, but as you see.....each in its way worth saving!
First, a Dalton Premier Quality early 50's "Night Club", a black homburg with deep rich purple binding and ribbon.....wonderful felt.....size 6 5/8....so too small for anyone really, but a keeper as a display piece....just because it is sooooo cool! Did I say the felt was awsome? It is an ink black and really soft! The "Controlled Brim" is interesting...

And then I have another Dalton. This time a late 50's early 60's Regal Quality backbow.....simply mint, appears unworn. Size 7, so trade bait! Simply love the tip logo on this. Has a nicely executed 2 1/4 inch overwelt brim. Good felt too, but not as nice as the Homburg.

Next is a really cool child's wool hat! Size 6 3/8.....a "Hi - Fella". I would guess late 50's early 60's but hard to say. VERY well made with an awsome ribbon! I can see the ad now....."wear a hat just like Dad's!". THIS will be a great display piece for me!

Winter is over.....continued hat finds.....

THEN there is this unworn (but ill kept) late 50's 3X Open Road. It sat in its box unattended far too long! Wonderful, soft supple felt.........it needs work.....absolutly mint.......BUT....the moths got hold of it....:( . IF someone wanted to spend the time to fill in the mothing and give it a light pouncing.....this would be one stand up hat! BUT as it is....size 7........CHEAP trade bait. ;)

I have been craving this hat for several months, but it is a 7 1/8.
I just picked up a boater that Ignacio conformed to my head, and now I know that he can make this Yeddo Straw hat fit me, so I bought it.

It's perfect! I discovered Yeddo straw from Alan's posts, and he confirmed this one's a good one.
Thank you, Alan!

You've been busy, Mark. I'm with Jim on these: the homburg looks best. I can relate on finding one that's gorgeous and not your size: I have a Portis like that in my display cabinet. I only have one porkpie in my collection and I've been battling with it since I got it to turn it into a fedora (it won't budge).

Not my style of hat, but this one looks pristine, Max. Awesome liner.

Winter is Over.....run about finds continued.......next is another entry for a mid to late 50's Stetson 3X dress fedora. Has a mode edge, GREAT FELT! Hard to capture the color....kind of a light blue/light grey. Has a wind trolley as well as a 2 1/2 inch brim! Only really, really wish it was my size! Size 7:( so set out for trade......

20190325_182954.jpg

AND THEN....on Sunday.........at an antique show .......sitting on a chair........is THIS AWSOME 30'S STANDARD QUALITY STETSON!!;) Great wide frayed end, offset ribbon, really nice felt with a goldish lining, has a cream colored sweat (which makes the debossing hard to read). It is a light grey with black ribbon. AND.......AND......AND.......IT IS MY SIZE! So, I just guess I will keep it!:):):):):):):):):):):):):)
It is not new and minty like some of my other finds, but it has character built right in! The awsome bash is as found......and while Standard Quality was the 5 dollar introductory hat to the Stetson line bavk then.....the felt quality still beats the hell out of most any modern fedora!

Incredible! That Standard Quality is your size!?!? That’s a rare find. I’d be happy with the 3X in my size.
