There is a rumor floating around, and I haven't tracked down whether this is true or not, but the Smoking Man gets his cigarettes for free since he's in on the conspiracy.

Ahhh.. I don't think so! That would be illegal and a federal crime as a Constitutionally applied federal tax is imposed on the manufacture and sale of tobacco products and enforced by the ATF. 'Smoking Man' may obtain his cigarettes from an Indian Reservation or perhaps a military PX, but only in quantities prescribed by the law.

Sorry that whimsical argument is just blowing so much smoke!

Did he complain about the high taxes he's paying on his cigarettes? lol Cheers,
Tom

He sounds like he may be a "Tax Prostester" to me! If SM has an objection to tobacco taxes he should write his congressman or quit "volunteering" for such a tax by ending his filthy habit of ingesting nicotine! The nerve! Why, it's un-American! ;)

The joke's worn a bit thin. Needless to say we'll not likely ever agree with each other's points, so be it. As it is I'm bored with the conspiracy theories.

At some level governments need to exist, reasonable people can debate as to it's size, and thus the government need financing to fund it's activities whatever the given size may be. This financing must come from somewhere, in the form of income taxes, user fees, sales taxes ............... I'd be interested in continuing a discussion of how governments should be funded; flat tax, national sales tax, current system........, but I'm bored with the rest.

Well I should think you would be! Aren't you glad you live in a Constitutional Republic where Art. I, Sec. 8, Clause 1, and Art. I, Sec. 9, Clause 4, tells us what taxes our government is Constitutionally authorized to collect and where the Supreme Court of the United States of America declared "that the Sixteenth Amendment "conferred no new power of taxation" on Congress". Or, no new powers that it didn't already have within it's Constitutionally restricted jurisdiction - Art.I, Sec.8, Clause 17.

The Rule of Law, not men, is magnificent.

At least we can agree on that, can't we?

Your time is considered to be worth nothing (always the case). You need to save up all your receipts and deduct your costs against the sales proceeds.
Sale price of hat
less cost of hat
less cost of materials to restore hat
less mileage to thrift store to buy the hat
less mileage to the store to buy materials to restore hat
less ebay fees
less paypal fees
less depreciation of pc
less depreciation of camera
...
= net profit on sale

I've just spent the last two hours putting together a spreadsheet to do this and puzzling over it and here is a useful list of things to think about...

however the camera and pc depreciation won't be included - i'd have had those anyway

The bit about the laws not allowing for taxes to be collected is an urban myth. That has been struck down in more than one court case.

I retort......

I've been challenging the IRS for over ten years to provide me with the law that requires me to pay an income tax and so far, after about 100 request, they haven't been able to do so.

To me, it should be pretty straight forward.
