OPINION: Did Hats Direct Cheapen the Fed?

Just a couple of cents worth here. I visited Optimo (Graham Thompson's place in Chicago) this past Summer, and couldn't help but notice that all of the made-up hats tended to have smaller, tapered crowns in comparison to the era we tend to 'worship' here. Same with brim size, 2 3/8ths was a wide brim at Optimo. I was wearing 2 1/2 to 2 5/8ths brims the two days I visited, and when I discussed possibly ordering a hat, the gal was suggesting 2 1/4 for me, thinking that 2 3/8ths was wide for me. My avatar is a 2 1/2.

It was just 2 years ago that I ordered my 1st hat, a custom made Beaver Brand. (off topic, but odd coincidence that they refer to their step-up from standard as a 'heritage' body, same as Akubra?) I remember being intimidated by the crown and the brim, even though it was just a 2 3/8. I got over that, but it seems to be that only the experienced hat wearers seek out the wider brims; newbies are apparently more likely to buy a slightly less imposing hat. So, I must agree with Dumbjaw, Bendingoak, Dr. Strange and a few others that if Akubra toned down the Fed, it was probably because they wanted to draw in newbies and not scare them away with the larger proportions of the more classic era.

My Beaver Brand sits in the closet in its box now, I have maybe 2 or 3 hats with only a 2 3/8ths brim and I just do not wear them. Oughta sell 'em.

The Lone Felter was a bit :eek:fftopic: .
He probably needs his own thread.
Short hares may not entirely explain the conspiracy theory.

Well I tried.

I just got an email from Deb Leake, from Hats Direct, and they are out of the Fed IV in carbon grey in a 58 cm. Won't have any in stock until February. Now I have to decide to either wait for it, change colors or order another model.

[huh]

So basically, I got nothin'.

Re: previous post

Well, I didn't want to wait any longer, so I emailed hatsdirect and told them to go ahead and send the dark brown. It came in the mail on Christmas eve! I spent about 15 minutes putting a generic bash on it and wore it yesterday. I'll try to get pics up later today. It's already my new favorite hat. I've been liking the Stylemaster, but now I finally "get" what it is about the Fed IV.

Guess that'll learn ya to call my bluff! :p

My good bud just ordered a Fed IV Deluxe in moonstone... after his Akubra CEO took flight the other day, in a 50mph wind gust.

Looks like next week I'll be able to give a real opinion on it. I'm lookin forward to it. I told him not to touch it... Let me bash it. :D

Fed IVs rock, pure and simple.

Big, soft, bashable, comfortable, sheds water, retains shape--where else can you get a hat that good in a retro size and shape made from really good fur felt for under $100 USD delivered? I'm hooked on Akubra open crowns. I have a tawny fawn Fed IV, a David Morgan Adventurer, with a moonstone Fed IV Deluxe on the way.
