Struck out. Stuart says he does not make a jacket that will meet my requirements.

Pretty certain "lightweight" and "not chrome tanned" were words he did not want to hear. I can accept his disposition.

I have sent a note to Johnson Leathers, will update.

I am not ready to do a custom order from overseas yet, for those that have recommended overseas makers.

I have also learned that I may prefer off the rack jackets, because it limits my imagination and expectations. The Japanese jackets have met all my needs to date, so I may just stay there for my final piece.

Where is that FW Speed Master in my size...

No, he does not work with veg tanned leathers, they are not as functional. With LW, it is always chrome tanned.

Were you fixated on veg tan?

I am not fixated. But I don't like chrome tanned leather, I prefer veg tanned. Either way, he closed the door on me.

I should say, that I let him know that I could live with chrome tanned leather, but he still passed.

I am searching for, as I have in the past, for a FW Speed Master in a 42. I know I would love it. Not 100% certain it will fit.

If you don't like chrome tanned leather, then best not go with it, it is jacket you want to love not just live with. At least with jackets we have that choice lol

I respect that he believes we are not a good fit together, at least for the jacket I asked for from him.

He would rather lose a sale than have anything less than a very satisfied customer.

My recommendation is Thedi then, his selection of veg tanned leathers is second to none, all top notch.

Edit: typos

I have just sent one more email to Stuart, worded differently, in an attempt to work with him.

I feel like I might like a Deerskin jacket, in the Buco Rider style, I would like to see if he would consider that.

I understand, but do not know first hand, that chrome tanned deer is soft and supple. I would like this to be an easy to wear jacket.

I am not ready for custom order from overseas at this time, and I am leaning toward off the rack as I have had tremendous success there. But I have really liked the LW Buco Rider design, so I have been trying to see if I can do that as you originally suggested.

The blue deerskin, at least from the last batch I had is a kind of greyish blue, lovely colour. It is not as dark as the navy HH. It will not age like the HH version, but it doesn't have much of a top coat, and will scratch pretty easily. Which should give it a nice patina. Trying to give you as much detail so you know what to expect.

Let me know if you have any question regarding the hide :)

Yes please. What is the color under the top coat? Any photos?

Will Stuart allow changes to a jacket design? Like delete pockets, add kidney panel, move cuff zippers to top of sleeves?

I think so, I tend not to change much to his designs. Best for you to just call him and discuss everything directly. He is really nice to talk to and very knowledgeable.

"We don't make Custom Jackets for first time customers." That is their policy... I believe he said that deerskin is custom order too... So I suppose I could not ask for a deerskin Buco Rider even if I did not ask for any other changes.

I attempted to paint a bigger picture, that I wanted to replace my Aero, I like his Buco Rider, that I owned FW... He says "The mfgs you mention make very different jackets than we do and we do not feel we can furnish what you want."

So he, with grace and thanking me for my interest in his products, turned me down. And I am sad because while I could be happy with a stock jacket for my first jacket... I don't know if I can do custom order, without it being custom... I do not need a stock 4oz jacket from Lost Worlds, that is reality that both he and I know.

Just sharing my experience.

Hmm... just noticed that there actually no pics for the buco rider in deerskin. Not sure what to say here...

I know from experience that Stuart hates FW and Aero, so mentionning them to him doesn't really score any points in your favour.
After your exchange, he probably is convinced you are not going to like his jacket and decided he would rather not make the sale rather than having to deal with a client that wants a refund on a non refundable jacket.
Maybe try again in a month or two.
I have in the past asked for specific things, only to be told it was impossible and they would not do it, but then a month later it was suddenly possible and he acted like it was never a problem.
You have to catch him on a good day for certain things, Stuart works in mysterious ways sometimes...

As Red Devils says, might be worth calling him, he is very easy to talk to.
