Wonderful, if anxiety inducing pictures! I wouldn't risk such a crowd unless I were desperate, I don't think! I also can't help but be reminded of that one scene in Safety Last, I believe, where all the lady patrons are positively stampeding, and generally causing a ruckus, while poor Lloyd copes as best he can! lol

Has anybody here been to Wal-Mart on the day after Thanksiving lately? It's far worse--there are usually stories on the news of people being trampled in the rush for bargains and having to be taken to the hospital.

One lady interviewed had been shoved aside a bit (don't think she had actually been trampled), and she had the nerve to blame Wal-Mart for not providing enough security or crowd control! I couldn't believe it. People act like animals, rather than civilized human beings, and then expect the government or some other incarnation of The Man to protect them from themselves.

I'm sure the folks in these pictures were more restrained in their enthusiasm. It was a more civilized age.

I remembering hearing stories about people lining up around the block to get the PS2 when it came out...and they became a target for muggers who went to work on people in line, or waited in the parking lot where shoppers were bringing their PS2s to their cars.

These photos are wonderful. They certainly have a different dynamic than shopping today. For one thing, I love how everyone is so nicely dressed of course, but (it could just be the fact that they knew they were being photographed) it just seems a lot less depressing than department store/shopping environments today.

I saw many images on the news of the crowding at doorways before early sales around thanksgiving and Christmas. People were pushing and shoving and trampled and injured. Startling when you juxtapose that with the photo of the ladies waiting for the Dollar Day sale.
