Bibendum!

"The birth of the Michelin Man. At the Lyon Universal Exhibition in 1894, the Michelin brothers noticed an evocatively-shaped pile of tires on their stand. ... The latin quotation from Horace, “Nunc est Bibendum” (now it is time to drink) declared by the character was also reused by Michelin."

That was a big promotion done by Procter and Gamble on several of their daytime radio serials -- a "complete this sentence in so many words" contest in which you have to explain why you like Ivory Flakes. They gave a new 1940 Pontiac to each of the 50 best sentences, spread out over five weeks along with 1,000 gallons of Fire Chief gasoline, with the winners to be announced each day on "The Right To Happiness." P&G did a whole string of these contests during the 1937-40 period with different makes of cars, but the 1000 gallons of Fire Chief was always part of the deal. Send your entry with one Ivory Flakes box top or facsimile to Ivory Flakes, Box 238, Cincinnati Ohio. Remember, sincerity and clarity of thought are most important -- enter as many times as you like, and all entries become property of Procter and Gamble Incorporated. This contest void where prohibited by law.
