That car that's getting the business in the second shot is a 1942 DeSoto, the first regular-production American car with retractable headlights. Very few of these made their way into the hands of the public before all 1942 models of all cars in stock were impounded by the government for war-critical use only. A lot of these DeSotos ended up as military staff cars.

During the Second World War, you couldn't just walk into a shop and buy as much sugar or butter or meat as you wanted, nor could you fill up your car with gasoline whenever you liked. All these things were rationed, which meant you were only allowed to buy a small amount (even if you could afford more). The government introduced rationing because certain things were in short supply during WW2.

Looks like Raymond was on a diet or tight on “moolah!” :p
