Some of the Boys tried to justify the girlie art in their magazine ads by claiming it was for "the troops overseas." But during WWII, "the troops overseas" got specially-produced "pony-edition" copies of stateside periodicals with the ads deleted. The GI magazine "Yank" published its fair share of cheesecake -- Milton Caniff's comic strip "Miss Lace" was more sexually explicit than anything published back home that wasn't sold in a plain brown wrapper -- but at least they were up front about it.

"Yank" didn't have the slightly-sexy tire ads, but it did have its famous full-page pin-up in every issue. Some were movie stars and some were "girl-next-door" types.
Probably the origin of the "I only buy "Yank" for the articles." excuse...

In 1984, Harry Thompson bought the lot for the mere sum of $1,200.
He planned to build a gas station there, but he had one problem:

most of the 4.5 acre-lot was covered by a small mountain.

Harry began blasting away at the mountain, clearing space for his pumps.
Then he decided to just leave the rest of the mountain
where it was, hollow it out and put his convenience store inside.

Two months and a bunch of dynamite later, he had a store.
Some of the walls inside are still bare rock.

It appears that they are performing a fuel economy test on one of the new 1920 Maxwell cars. This car the Model 25, had couple of notable problems; weak rear axle assemblies, poorly mounted fuel tanks, and engine quality control issues. These, combined with the sharp Depression of 1920-21 put the company in the unenviable position of having more than 20,000 units (of a total run of just over 35,000) unsold at the end of the season.

"The Forgotten Depression"
The unemployment level was briefly higher than that of the 1930-33 cataclysm. The crisis developed swiftly, but ended equally quickly.
1920-1 was basically caused by reconversion from war production, the loss of European markets as their own industries restarted, and disinflation. The essential economy and the banking system which supporter it were basically sound, or sound as they could be under the regime of the day.

The Great Depression in the US, on the other hand, began after the Market crash as a mild slowdown in consumer spending, but did not really take hold until the second quarter of 1931, when the worldwide credit system froze utterly. We were very close to a similar freeze-up in 2008

I'm back from an 11 day vacation, having travelled to the midwest (Dallas and points in-between), and back again; nice place to visit, but I'm glad to be home. :)

I've got a few photos of defunct stations I snapped along the way., when the weather was permitting...I'll put them up here in the near future.

Now, back to my regularly scheduled posting! :)
