Many years ago I received a phone call from a fellow traveler in the vintage-clothing world, directing me in hushed tones to a rummage sale in a church basement on the Upper West Side. ‚ÄúSunny von B?ºlow,‚Äù he whispered. ‚ÄúGo.‚Äù

So I went, and as a result I now own chiffon handkerchiefs monogrammed “Martha” (her real name), custom-made walking shoes and an exquisite embroidered nightgown, the execution of which must have driven a Swiss nun blind.

It's true--I think everyone thinks a little about the past owner of anything vintage that they own. It sort of adds to the charm.

I couldnt tell if the article was mocking or being sincere [huh] as to the types of people who tend to venture into the vintage clothing arena.

Oh well.

You gotta watch The Times. They have subtle ways of letting you know what they think of a scene, a style, etc. Anything to do with preserving history, especially modern history, usually gets a slight snook cocked at it.

The piece also reinforces the definition of vintage clothing as women's clothing, and as an essentially feminine pursuit.

Dead Stock: why are so many headlines puns on the articles?

That was a pretty narrow topic for that article. Gee whiz, what about all those library books that have been handled by dozens of people? CREEPY! Or the theatre seat? Ooh, I feel the vibes. Lionel Hampton must've sat there? So pointless.
