I am 37, dance quite a bit, and have decent gluteous maxima, if I may say so. But most extra weight goes straight to my belly.
I second the weight training. Bill Phillips, who designed Body for Life, says that if you just do aerobic exercise, you'll lose weight, but you'll just end up having a smaller pear shape. You need some sort of weight bearing exercise to have a toned physique.
