Midnight Palace's thread reminded me of another thread I wanted to start. Do you have a past & present photo of a particular location? If so, please post it.

Here's a photo of Sunset Blvd and Vine Street in Hollywood, CA circa 194? Looks like late 40s.

Vine Street is the vertical street, Sunset is the horizontal.

Then:
SunsetVine1.jpg

NBC Radio City (right) was where many radio programs were broadcasted from including Jack Benny (when his show was on NBC) and Fibber McGee and Molly.

and here's what it looks like

Now:
sunsetvine2006.jpg

You can see what is still occupying Vine Street including the Broadway Hollywood sign, the white building on the left behind Wallacks Music City, and the Taft Building which is that brown building on the right just before the next street, Hollywood Blvd. You can't see it in the modern photo because trees are blocking it.

If you have now and then photos to share, please do. :)

The vintage photo is early '50s. The light blue car behind the red bus stop bench is a 1952 Chevrolet. (The split-level spear on it's flank gave it away.) And that's a '49 or '50 black Packard convertible in the lower left corner. (Id LOVE one of those!)

Very nice pictures, friend. Thank you. :)

1987 (me when I was 12 lol ) Still looks the same today.

The Showboat is the Surf. You can see the same tower in the righthand corner of the photos, also the three flagpoles in the center!

Inside the same theatre, 1929 *sigh*

Inside now, facing the same wall as the photo above :(

Just in case anyone's interested...

Here's a snapshot of Eyre Square in Galway, circa 1880 and one from the last year or so:

We went to one of the local high school theatres last night - actually, they'd torn down the old auditorium (originally constructed in 1902) and built a brand new state of the art theatre ($3.2 milllion price tag). They did Thoroughly Modern Millie with a cast of about 70 and 50 piece orchestra and it was phenomenal - and due to the costs these days, you can never see that large a cast and that large an orchestra without popping $125 or more, unless it is a college or high school production where it's all unpaid talent. I felt like I was seeing something by Busby Berkeley or the like, something from the glory days of the American musical theatre. And all these kids did a truly amazing, polished, professional job.

Anyway...what I thought was great was that they salvaged all of the original cast iron seat row-ends and used them in the railings of the balcony and elsewhere. I thought it was a nice touch mixing the old with the new. They also had a couple rows of the original seats (105 years old & still perfectly functional!) in the "lobby" area where you could sit down waiting for the doors to open or at intermission.

OH - one of the characters was wearing a pair of spectators at one point...I asked him after the show (student of my partner). "Oh yeah, those shoes were pretty neat. Some company donated them...Allan somebody..." I just rolled my eyes, shook my head...I'll let him know later he had on a pair of $225-250 shoes...

Keep them coming. If anyone has an evolving location, like one at varies points in time, that's be great. What I find really interesting in these photos is not the location but it's surroundings. Landscapes changing over time is fascinating.

INCREDIBLE!!!

Definately a vast improvement for San Fransisco but Hollywood and Vine just doesn't have the same style and charm as it did in that 1950's pic.

Sydney now and then

My, how the views have changed!

A photo of Broadway in the 1910s contrasted with 2003:

Broadway is the main road heading into the City from the west. It leads directly into the main street, George Street. In the 1980s it was Rockabilly turf; skinheads and punks avoided the place with good reason!

Here's a picture of Margaret Street in 1932, compared with 2003:

And finally, George Street as seen from Park Street; this is the intersection with the Queen Victoria Building on the left, and the Town Hall to the right. The first shot was taken in 1932, the second in 2003. Familiar as I am with the view in the 2nd photo, I can barely recognise the intersection it has changed so much!

Here's some I took in 1998 on the occasion of the reissue of the great Berenice Abbott's book, Changing New York. Her photos (the ones on the left) were taken in the late 1930s.

I was working at Barnesandnoble.com as an editor at the time, and decided to do a feature on the book that included a bit of strictly amateur "after" photography to contrast with Abbott's "before" shots. All these shots are of neighborhoods sit south of 23rd Street in Manhattan.

A couple of years ago, someone published a book based on this same idea -- revisiting Abbott's photos and photographing those sites today. Too bad I didn't try to sell the idea myself years ago (though I'm no photographer, so it's probably better that I didn't).
