Lefty -- consulting the Dating Vintage Stetsons By Price thread, I see that I had found a 1937 ad for an "Air-Light" Whippet. So, the term was in use as early as '37.

Cheers,

According to Dinerman, in a post about his Air Light Playboy, it goes back as far as '34. Though I've only just begun my obsession with a hat I'm yet to receive, I haven't seen anything earlier than '36.

Thanks for Buler for grabbing this one for me.

Apparently, based upon a quick glance of a number of articles (not ads), helmets were popularly called steel Stetsons.

We'll be there for you when you come home, but why wait? Stop off in Paris or London on the way home and buy a hat.

My framed copy of the famous Stetson Whippet ad, hanging in my home office. It's cut from a magazine dated October 1st, 1949. (I purchased the page from eBay -- I had no part in the actual destruction of the magazine.)

You might want to see if you can get a decent quality printout of this one featuring Dick Haymes.
This too dates from 1949 - confirmed by the film plug. (Click pic for huuuge file.)

1952 Stetson Railbird - different from the one that just sold on the bay, as this one has a ribbon
