Nothing but Seamed Stockings

I would like to buy some stockings from Secrets In Lace, but find I don't fall in anywhere on their sizing chart. My legs certainly aren't long, and are not thin. Also, I'm not a plus size. Just don't know what to buy!

Traditionally size 10 refers to the length of your foot (in inches) not shoe size. Opera is about the length of the stocking, not the width. If you are 5'7" and taller, average weight, and have that height in your legs, opera would most likely be your best bet.

Stocking fit can be tricky. Id recommend a first purchase to get the fit you are looking for, then stock up.

I am 5'10" and their opera are too long on me. I just go with their longs.

Yeah that was my thoughts as I usually have problems with them being way way way to short.

Thank you for the advice Lady Day! I still haven't purchased any of their stockings, as I have several from other companies. On my wish list though.

I found several pairs of vintage stockings at my local(ish) thrift store. The sizes are very strange to me and this thread certainly clears that up. I have one pair that I LOVE, they are nude, seamed with a cuban heel. They fit nicely on the foot but they are really long. I think the size was 9.5-35. Sizing is so important; they don't stretch like modern stockings.

Hm, I'm not much on one piece panty hose, but this might be a great alternative to days I can't or won't wear my garter belt.

I read the other day Pretty Polly are bringing out a range of vintage style stockings and tights too, including seamed and cuban heels, could be interesting, if they stock them in most high street shops like the normal range they do.

From what age was it common or acceptable for a girl to being wearing seamed/fully fashioned stockings?

A girl might get her first pair of sheer hose around junior high age -- 13 or 14 for most girls, although there might be some who wore them sooner, and there might be others whose parents might make them wait until they were as old as 16. But generally, by the time a girl was ready to enter high school, she'd be wearing adult hosiery for dressy occasions. For everyday wear, though, she would likely be in bobby socks or knee socks until late in her teens.

I'm 18 now but I wore a pair of seamed stockings when I was about 15 or so and it took loads of persuasion for my mother to buy them for me.

Just a note about Magnolia - I have ordered 2 pair of hose thru them, and the hose were very nice and VERY thin and light. Unfortunately I did not get to wear them as I went a size up and the feet were too big and the length was WAY too long. I would email them first on sizing before ordering. I sent a pair back for a refund about 4 weeks ago and still no credit. Not sure if this is due to my bank or them, but thought I would throw in a word of caution. Not that I would discourage anyone from ordering from the Magnolia State - especially as much as I loved living there!

I just last weekend hit an estate sale of an elderly lady who never through out anything. I found about two dozen pairs of seamed stockings, and a half dozen pairs still in packaging. Never did find the darn garters though, sadly.

This is something I've never understood about Magnolia (and WKD as well) - their stockings run in regular S/M/L type sizing, but I don't see how you can get a stocking that really fits when you're just going to height? Even small size differences in vintage stockings seriously change the way they fit on me. For example, a size 9 will fit me perfectly but a 9 1/2 is waaay too long in the foot. Height has nothing to do with stocking sizing - it's mostly about foot size.

Also, I just noticed that WKD is only offering one type of FF stockings now (not counting the rayon ones). What's up with that?

I have recently found out proper sizing on seamed hose...according to most of the info I have found under different sites I am a size 10. This should correspond to a US shoe size 8 for my height, 5 foot 5. Only question I have is about the measurements at the top of the stocking. My legs are a bit larger and I hate to have circulation to the rest of my legs cut off at the thigh, which has happened before with other hose *cough* LEG AVENUE.
