Spent the morning with Mike for my Birthday treat. Watched him build a sweat, stitching etc... Much to my surprise, he had my Baby Blue Duplex custom finished! He sent an email, must have missed it. This is the perfect hat for spring, on sunny and cool days. The light blue brim is Winchester bunny. He has pounced it to the quality of the finest beaver, great new process I understand. The crown is one of his better quality Cuenca bodies. The shark's gills are just a joy to behold, they are crisp and perfectly in line. This hat will be my signature lid for an upcoming Alaska cruise in June. Have to decide what to wear to the formal dinners on board???

Very enjoyable visit with Mike Miller today. I didn't distract him much from all of your hats in process. We planned my next hat, a Steel Whippet Clone with burgundy ribbon/binding. And...I picked up the new Bone Lord's Hat. A true "Lord's Hat" with pinches and an interesting triple stitching on a homburg style brim. The bone felt in beaver is truly an interesting tone, it is, well...bone. Kind of like a bone that has been sun bleached, not white, more of a light cream tone. I wore the duplex down to visit it's homeland.

While at NW Hats, I tried on some interesting customs. I always play with his hats! If there is anybody out there with a gargantuan size 8 (!!!), Mike has a Indy hat waiting for them. The guy he made it for passed away before he could pick it up. Image below. And if anyone has a Dick Tracy fetish, how about a bright yellow fur felt Fedora! All you need is a wrist telephone (from Apple?) and a yellow trench coat. Quite a fun hat, probably a 7 1/8?

I wish we could have joined you! Spring break this week and we've been running around catching movies, trying new restaurants, etc. May be headed to Pittock Mansion tomorrow. I have some hats I'd like to take to Mike to see what he thinks about working on them for me. A Montecristi or two, a parabuntal? body from the Philippines, a raw Stetson No.1 body to dye and block, etc, etc, etc and get in the queue for something in navy felt.

He had a couple in the showcase that are incredible straws. Waiting to be picked up. One had the tightest weave I've ever seen. A truly antique body that he turned into a show piece.

Mike has customs in stock? I never thought of asking him what he might have for immediate delivery in my size. I’m not an “Indy” guy but I’d go for the one you photographed if it was my size.

Your bone lords hat is unique and looks great. Sort of reminds me of your/Matt’s Huggy Bear sans the Rhode Island Red treatment.

He doesn't necessarily have a stock of his hats. He displays customer's hats before they pick them up. And like with the size 8 Indy, he was stuck with that one. And he said it would not size down due to it's construction. Sometimes he has hats he makes as a test for himself, but he is my size. You could call him and ask though.

Looks Fun!!

Size 8 you say? Hmmmmmm.....I have a co-worker with a crystal skull sort of a melon that I am thinking is around a 7 7/8 (quick measurement we did a while back), he sees me wear my hats to work every day and we have been talking about getting him a custom. Not sure if a indy hat is what he is looking for. I might have to ping Mike and get some more info on that one.

It is a full on Indy hat with the pinches and wonkyness to make it authentic. I'm sure Mike would be happy to let it go. The unusual size will sit without the right person. It is of course, his usual fine work. Great hat.

Mike just sent me photos of my completed beaver fedora. I’m shocked at the color as rendered by his photos and my display. What color do you think this is? I’m curious as it does not look like the color I ordered.

Maybe it’s just his photography or my monitor, but the color is...disappointing. I hope that when I receive it the actual color will be what I expected.

What colour is it supposed to be?

What colour is it supposed to be?

Mike assured me that his photography skills are to blame. To me, the felt looks greenish (I don’t see yellow) and my first thought was he made a mistake and used a pecan felt. He has assured me that the hat is a deep rich brown that will have more/better color saturation than the rabbit fur felt I already have in the same color. The color is WHISKEY, but photos scared me. I hope to have the hat by the end of the week and I’ll post photos.
