You're welcome, buddy. Yup. 1 inch would be right for a mid ribbon. I've often found, at times, it's best to have fewer choices than to have too many....and especially since the options I gave and the opinions I expressed are my personal preferences in hat styles, which may or may not be in line with what you like in hat styles. My personal preferences in fedoras gravitate more toward the '40sish to early '50s styles of mid and thin ribbons like the Playboys, the Wanderers, Strats, and ORs, although I don't discount wider ribbons, either. Just because I like those styles doesn't mean the next guy does. Unfortunately, I think I only aided in creating unnecessary confusion. As we've all seen many times on the forum each member has their own personal preference. Most importantly, you're the person who has to be satisfied. Mike's a good guy to work with and his creations are some of the best, ( just look at the Campaign hat he finished, i.e.). He does very crisp, clean work.

With that said, here's more to add to the confusion! This is a custom that Mike made up for me. It has an 1 1/2 ribbon width and the hat has a '40s - early '50s vibe. The open crown on this is 5 3/4, 4 3/4 at the pinch, and a rake sloping back to 4 1/4. The brim width is 2 3/4. This hat can also be worn with either dressy attire, or with casual wear. I like to try and choose hat styles than can be versatile....I told Mike the style I was after and he nailed it! Perfectly! The only drawback was my decision in the color choice. I don't seem to pull off Pecan as well as others do. Nonetheless, you can clearly see the artistry in Mike's work. Very clean and very crisp.

I'm already thinking of my next commission for Mike. One of the great coaches at OSU was "Slats" Gill. We named our basketball palace (this year its the women's palace, not the men's sadly) for him. I found this great image of Slats from around 1934. I'm not sure if I can pull off the Hollywood crease. The rest of the lines of this hat appeal to me a lot. Now, silverbelly or sand?

I'm open for suggestions...

Mike's finishing up my daughter's Cuenca "western style hat, finishing it off with a burgundy pug. I'M STOKED! I asked Mike to make a bow with 2 "wings" on both sides to somewhat resemble Alan's Vanzina of last week. I love it already. What a flashy number for spring!

The pic suggests a color darker than Silverbelly. If you already have 1 or more hats in that shade -- which is tremendously versatile and would work -- maybe sand or Sahara would be a good color. The mid-width ribbon is a good touch.

And Slats has a little of the young Pat O'Brien look about him.

I just love this hat!! That combo is a keeper. Maybe a sahara felt with this ribbon. I'll check in with Mike next week on getting in the queue once more.

Thanks, guys. This turned out better than I had imagined. I looked at 9 or 10 different ribbons and hundreds of pictures trying to decide what knot to put on the bow. It came down to two different bow knots I liked that Mike has done on his hats. This knot is the less used of the two and Mike did it just right. I'm about jumping out of my skin. It might go out in the mail tonight... tomorrow at the latest. I should have it here by Thursday or Friday depending on the shipper. WooHoo!

I find the brim width interesting on this hat. The image is from the mid 1930s, kind of before wide brims were the thing. I'll have to look at some mid thirties ads to see this. Also, Moon's thoughts of it being an early Playboy is also of interest. More research is warranted.

Flashy spring - no way, flashy all year fedora. Grand looking hat and bow. I too am taken with the bow on Alan's Vanzina. Can not wait to see pics of the hat in the wild.

Searching the Lounge and interwebs for other views and images. I think you are onto something. I'm also going to look at other photos of Slats Gill from his early career to spot this hat again. Most of the images are of him coaching inside a gym, so no hats.
