You know, I actually do that. If you look at pics of old leather jackets - esp horse hide jackets - the neck at the fold is often rotted and ripped, etc. My theory - not rocket science - is that it's from the salt from sweat that goes uncleaned for years.
So, I will clean and put on a thin layer of Vaseline or whatever conditioner I have handy on the neck regularly. If you always wear a collared shirt, it might not matter, but I often wear a t-shirt or other collarless shirt underneath and Id rather not see the neck get destroyed...
