Saw "North by Northwest" the other night, man - what a suit! Oh - great film as well! :p

In general, I really liked the costumes in that film. There were some nice suits to be seen, and more than a few choice lids.

Not knowing all that much about '50s fashion, I wasn't expecting to like what I saw.

I read here on the Lounge that Cary Grant's suit is rumoured to be a Brooks Brothers creation?

I think that this period would just about be the limit of my ideal era - anywhere from the mid '30s up to the early '50s.

It is a shame that they don't make suits like that anymore... I've been scanning eBay, but what I've come across look like cheapo lounge lizard versions.

Agreed! I loved everything about that film. Clothes, the technicolor treatment, the cars, set decoration. Amazing detail.

And it was SUCH a sexy movie!

Oddly enough, the day after I saw the film I was involved in a case of mistaken identity.

I was joined in the lift by three wide boy types, and told that I needed to get moving as someone (Gazza? couldn't make it out) was waiting. I told them that I must be the wrong person, they laughed and said that it wasn't the first time they heard that one...

This went on for a few minutes more, when they suddenly realised that I wasn't the man they were looking for.

They apologised said they never actually met the individual they were looking for face-to-face, and exited the lift. I called after them and asked how they decided it was me, and they said that "we were told to look for a bloke with a hat". [huh]

Through this brief, but odd, exchange I couldn't help but think about the scene in the film where Cary Grant was kidnapped by the bad guys!

Bernhard Hermann's soundtrack. The humour. The tension.

I like it, but have to admit it's not exactly one of my favorites. Whether that is due to the whole 50's era (which I've never been a huge fan of to begin with, I suppose), or Eva Marie Saint annoying the heck out of me, I don't know! lol
