well at least this time no one can blame me for derailing a thread !

Its one of those things, like the Papal Tiara which we want to see but lets face it, things are going to get MORE and MORE casual, not less, the more distance we place between the "Golden Era" and the new century. While some of our suits and hats may not stick out too much today, in 50 years will they be thought of the way stuff in the 1830s would have been thought of by the man of 1950 or 1960? Probably so. I hate it as much (if not more!) than any of you, but its just the way it is. and no one can possibly expect a presidency that is trying its best to appeal to young people (looking cool and hip and in touch) will go all out. This president is not trying to appear as a "stuffy old suit" like every other politician. whether he is a stuffy old suit or not is of course, another story altogether. But all that really matters in many ways is image.

I sure feel better knowing that all these rich and powerful world leaders are just plain folks after all! I can really identify with them, unlike in the past when they tried to be educated and dignified!

It may be due to practical reasons; if the US President was unable to wear tails (due to engagements after the affair, or it being a flying visit, or even perhaps for political reasons, etc.) it wouldn't exactly be the done thing for others to wear it.

A shame if it doesn't come back next year - I'm hoping it's a one off

Dress for the Nobels is now dictated by the American president?

Quite simply put the Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo is a lot less formal than the one in Sweden and quite different in tone and tradition.

Timeline:

2008 September -invitation letters sent out
2008 November 04 - quadrennial presidential elections
20 January 2009 Obama inaugurated as 44th President

2009 February - Deadline for submission
2009 March April - preparation of short list
2009 March August - adviser review
2009 October 09 - Obama :"To be honest,” the president said in the Rose Garden, “I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who have been honored by this prize, men and women who’ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.”

2009 November Nobel laureates are chosen
2009 December - Nobel laureates awarding ceremony

This feeling was expressed in the lack of white tie.

Whilst I appreciate my initial point has been largely rendered irrelevent due to the discovery that the Oslo ceremony is less formal than that in Stockholm (a case of a critical research failure on my part), the point was less relevent to him being the US President, but more the fact that he was being awarded the Peace Prize, which (again, due to critical research failure at the time of the initial posting) I falsely believed to be considered the "senior" prize

Mrs. Clinton would not be the first woman to deservedly "wear the trousers" in a relationship. However, let us try to focus the conversation to the topic at hand.
