newby looking for advice

I am new to the lounge and have been interested in fedoras for a while but do not have any as yet. My avoidance comes from the fact that I typically wear an A-2 jacket in the fall and winter and have an inordinate amount of khakis / chinos in my closet. My concern is that I will look like I am trying to pull off an Indiana Jones look.

Any suggestions for a hat style or do I just suck it up and go for it?

A thin ribbon or non-brown color would mute the effect. But of course, the cliche answer is this: If you wear the hat with confidence, it will be seen as your style, not as Indiana Jones or other hat-stereotypes. Hard to explain, but if you wear it with a certain intent, people can usually sense that.

'Fraid with the khaki/leather jacket look, for most of the population wearing ANY sort of brimmed hat is going to be perceived as the "Indy" thing. Unless you want to stop wearing what is comfortable for you and suits YOUR style, your just going to have to live with it if you want to weara Fedora styled hat. As a society, we just don't wear hats as the daily norm especially the Fedora style any more. And since that arraingement of clothing was used in that series of movies, you're going to get that sort of response. Decide what kind of hat you want, buy it , put it on your head as you go out the door and say "thanky" when folks comment

I'm not sure I would want to be branded as Indiana Jones, myself, and would take measures to avoid it. But there are plenty of hats you could get that would not evoke that reaction. Plenty. But that's what looking is for. One thing to do is check out EBay for fedoras, and buy one or two in your price range that look good on the computer screen. Every hat gives the wearer a different slant, and there is a large amount of unavoidable trial and error one has to go through. Other types of hats to try are a vintage Open Road that you can get on E Bay; and a new Campdraft, which is nearly identical to that. No way people are going to think you're Indiana Jones then. Most likely they'll think it's just you, only cooler.

As far as replys to being called Indy go, one of the Loungers says "That's Dr. Jones to you". I thought that was great especially if you say it with a little smile...

In my experience, I believe that if you are confident with such a clothing combination, you are less likely to be commented derogatorily, and actually complimented instead. This even applies to leather jackets, khakis, and fedoras paired together.

For what it's worth, I have not yet received a single Indiana Jones comment on either the hat (a light grey homburg with the brim snapped down and crown creased like a fedora) or leather jacket, especially when worn together, sometimes even with khaki or off-white chinos. Sure, maybe somebody's thinking in their head, but I have actually worn my brown Federation IV fedora with a leather jacket (a G-1, basically the Navy equivalent of the A-2 with a fur collar), and not surprisingly it wasn't long before I got an Indy-related comment. In my opinion it was likely the brown color, first off. The fact that my homburg closely resembled a fedora enough means to me that I can still wear a proper fedora (without the curled brim), and still not get the Indy thing. It's not that far off of a difference, so a similarly styled light grey fedora, to use an example, can still make you largely exempt from Indiana Jones comments.

If you're sure enough you can be comfortable doing it, then I don't see why not. Welcome to the forum!

I find that I almost never get the Indy comments. I've even worn an Indy jacket and Indy hat together, unconsciously, without so much as a funny glance. But, the world is filled with ignorant people waiting for a chance to stand up and be counted. It's their problem. Dress how you want to dress.

If you are wearing a brimmed hat, than someone will probably call you Indy at some point. Or a cowboy, or a gangster. There is not much you can do to avoid that. The aviator jacket with a fedora is a classic look. Rock it.

I got called Indiana Jones a couple weeks ago. I was wearing a green Whippet-style Stetson with shorts and sandals while raking the lawn. The person who said it to me was my neighbor's 6 year old kid. Indiana Jones is popular with the Legos crowd these days!
