The technology is here, now, why not use it? [huh]

If they had it back then, they would be all over it.

Because this is supposed to be a prequel. If they had ressurected Phase II and this was supposed to be what she looked like between the 5-year mission and the Movie, maybe. The only thing that can redeem this thing for me is if, in the final scene, they show her being refitted to how she really looks.

If only The God Thing or Phase II had been made instead of The Next Generation! Now that would have been awesome.

I look at this "prequel" in the same way as Casino Royale was - more of a reboot than a true prequel. So, with that perspective in mind, I am still excited about this movie.

I agree that it's going to be a reboot, I guess my hangup is that it effectively kills everything that came before. If this is to be canon, then where does Matt Jefferies' Enterprise fit in? But I'm still going to go see it, I'm nervous, but I have to see it to know. I'm just really, really dissapointed I'll never be able to see the old girl in her splendour on the big screen.

In answer to your Romulan question, the Romulan War was supposed to be over in 2160, and the Federation was founded in 2161, long before Kirk and Co in the 2260s. The TOS episode "Balance of Terror" was the first contact with the Romulans since the war, and also the first time humans had actually seen a Romulan. So maybe this Romulan they think is a Vulcan?

They have, but the New Voyages people used the original Enterprise, and even "Enterprise", which took several liberties with the canon, left her alone (both the Defiant and I believe a brief shot in the final episode of the 1701). Plus the Enterprise from "Trials and Tribbleations". But, as Jake says, this is a reboot, so all bets are off.

^ Not to mention in time for the movie. I imagine that a lot of people will dress up for the film. It may be worth going just to see some female audience members in miniskirts! :)

Star Trek can really do with a clean slate. By Enterprise it was practically collapsing underneath itself in terms of continuity. Also with each new cast, there was a bit less chemistry, and less stories to tell. Even with enterprise.

A return to the classic characters and classic time period is the best thing for it. A return to basics, where they can't solve everything by reversing the polarity of their deflection dish or creating a static warp bubble or whatever.

With this reset, discounting previous continuity is also helpful - it's far less interesting if we know how it all turns out (ala enterprise, star trek prequels etc). Then you can take the franchise anywhere you want. Also allows you to modify all the elements of the story and setting to a contemporary audience, while also retaining the core of the show.

Nemesis wasn't very good, if only that screenplay had been stronger. In all likelihood that will be the last NextGen movie. It is kind of sad that they had to go out on that note. I know that a lot of NextGen fans were hoping for six films, just like the original cast (of course, NextGen got seven seasons on TV, and TOS only 3 + animated).

And just think how the few Enterprise fans felt when their finale was more of a nod to the TNG cast members.
