I found this board when googling 40s fashion. Wow!! There is so much to read!

I am 42 with three kids.........15, 12 and 18 months. I work at a telephone cooperative as an accounting clerk. I enjoy bicycling, jazz and swing music, play piano some for church (yes, I am a Christian and believe we are living in the end times), basketball......I guess I could go on

My mom and dad were married in 1945, so I think that's why I want to know more about that time. I love the fashion, the music and the dancing. Did get to do a swing lesson at a university a few years ago and loved it! Feel like I can't really pursue it, though, with young kids who are fairly involved.

Glad to find this place!!

I'm still new, though I've been chatting it up around here. Found this terrific place through vintage hair and makeup communities on LiveJournal. My interest lies mostly with the 1920s and 1930s, and I've recently discovered the joys of silent film / pre-codes. I'm 30, work as assistant purchaser for a cabinet company, have been a Witch for (goodness!) 13 years, and love reading / writing poetry. My SO lives in Australia and is desperately trying to get a visa sponsor so he can move to NY.

Yay, another late '50s/early '60s fan! I just love everything about this era so much -- from the incomparable mid-century furnishings to the ultra-feminine clothing and hairdos to the fantastic late '50s/early '60s music. I totally agree with you about everything post '63 -- that's the cut-off point for just about everything I collect. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people think the '60s were all about hippies and such. As we know, the early '60s were nothing like what was to come later! Anyway, I better stop myself now -- I could keep writing about this stuff all night! I look forward to chatting with you more, and let me know if you've learned any good bouffant tips from beauty school!

oh my goodness, like I stated in my earlier post, I'm so excited to have someone interested in the same era that I am to chat with! Do you collect mid-century modern furniture? If you do, I would love to see pictures. I absolutly love the furniture (among everything else) from that time, and honestly, my boyfriend and I have cramed as much furniture into our little room that we could, we're just always finding amazing chairs, couchs, etc. at thrift stores and antique stores. I just can't wait to have an entire apartment (or house) to decorate.

As far as bouffants go, you just have to tease, tease, tease! And its ALOT easier to practice on someone else first, I've found that all of these great vintage styles that I used to do in school, seemed SO much easier to do on my mannequin's hair then on my own. But practice makes perfect. Its also helpful if you get yourself some kind of hair dryer, whether its an actual dryer chair, like the ones you would find in a salon, or just one of those bonnet dryers, which are very easy to come by on Ebay. It just makes setting your hair alot quicker, and it makes all of your curls neater, which is essential for the smooth sixties styles.

Oh, how exciting! Is it a dryer chair? Or a Bonnet Dryer? I had wanted one forever, and finally found one and bought it off ebay a while back. Its one of the ones that you would actually find in the salons, its from the sixties, its beautiful and I'm just in love with it! My boyfriend and I drove all the way from Santa Barbara, CA to Phoenix, AZ to pick it up (shows how badly I wanted one!). Strange as it is, I actually get excited to do my hair every night! You're going to love it!

I've been posting just a bit so far, but it's great to have a way to do a formal introduction! I'm a St. Louie gal, in my last year of college studying French and sending off applications for grad school (ahhhh!). I've been a lindy hopper/swing dancer for a few years now and vintage and bringing it back is my passion! It's LOVELY to have such a friendly group of you ladies to help out so that I learn everything I need to know. You classy ladies!

I absolutely love mid-century modern furniture; unfortunately I have to confine my collection to one room for now so I've had to pass on a lot of amazing pieces I've seen at estate sales and flea markets. My bed and dresser are both vintage; I don't have a picture of the dresser online, but here's my bed (I want to apologize in advance for the terrible picture):

The pink radio is a 1955 Emerson; the pink kitty bank is from the '60s and according to the original owner, a carnival prize! I have other '50s and '60s things (lamps, starburst clock, vintage pink princess phone...I can post pictures if anyone's interested) all over my room. I long for the day I have more space to display my finds!

Thanks for the tips! I've been considering buying a bonnet dryer for a while now, so that may have been the push I needed to finally get one! I'd love to see a picture of yours! I'm sure it's lovely; RaasAlHayya, yours is gorgeous! I'd love one of those vintage salon chairs, but I'd have no place to put it!

Hello Everyone.

They call me Huff. It's a nickname that derived from Heiffer and thats all I'm gonna say lol. Familial nicknames are always come from a funny place lol. My real name is Beverly which kind of goes well with my love of all things vintage considering everyone tells me they have a grandmother or great aunt named Beverly lol.

I will be 20 years old this month and have a beautiful 6 month old daughter. I'm doing the stay at home mom thing for now and trying to get done with some part time classes at university to finish up getting my bachelor's in Restaurant Management. (I had to take a semester off for the baby). I live in Rhode Island in a little house next to a pond in the middle of the woods with my boyfriend and our baby. We have a family of Swans as neighbors.

I love old Hollywood movies. I can't get over how glamorous the leading ladies were. Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Mae West, Lana Turner, Katherine Hepburn, and Grace Kelly are some of my faves. I even named my daughter Audriana for Audrey. I had planned to give her the middle name Grace after Grace Kelly and as my boyfriend was filling out the birth certificate I blurted out Marie instead lol.

I've never had the time or energy to dress vintage. I was always in class or working my rear-end off. Now that I find my days a lil lighter I have taken up sewing again and have been collecting vintage patterns to make my own clothes because I hate everything thats "in" now a days. I try to find vintage clothes but its a hit or miss here in Rhode Island and its hard to find something to fit my little waist and huge rear-end. I also collect vintage corsets.

I am also a burlesque dancer. I love the art of burlesque. I am working on opening my own club to pay tribute to the dancers of the early 20th century. I make my own costumes and have a blast mimicking the looks of Jennie Lee, Lily St. Cyr, Sally Rand, etc. I have, as my bf calls it, an unhealthy obssession with Dita Von Teese.

I feel like I've blabbed too much about myself. Well this is who I am and you'll be seeing me around. I like to just throw myself into posting otherwise I feel that I'll never do it and just be a wallflower in the message board.

Oh my Gawd! Seeing that thing brought back memories! My mom had one when I was a kid, I'm only 23 now so I think she had held on to it from her teen years. Hers was brown, and I remember her sticking me under it so she didn't have to blow-dry my hair. She told me a story about some dryer she used back in the day that she could have on her hair while sleeping, and it actually caught her bed on fire. Ooooppps!

New In the Room

Morning ladies! I'm new to posting, but I've lurked around for a while, originally found the site whilst googling for the now defunct Atomic Mag (RIP).

I love the forum and finally decided to register so I could join the conversations.

I live in Deco Dirt City, NM (Albuquerque). I moved here from NYC about four years ago to go to school.

I miss moving water, and snow, a lot.

I'm a burlesque dancer, a student, a part time seamstress. I love vintage clothing, furniture, cars and architecture from the '30s-'50s. I've been obsessed with vintage clothing since I was a freshman in high school, and I've emassed a decent collection in all those years. It's split between two places until i can make up my mind where I want to put down roots.

I love to sew, a lot. Eventually I'd like to run or help run a business that lets me sew, do hair and have an excuse to troll estate sales and collect all the cute kitsch that I love. I do custom pieces right now for friends and local girls in the scene. I'm currently expirmenting with a pair of highwaisted lightweight denim pants.

So.. yah, I think that's about it... Nice to meet all of you! look forward to many great conversations...

As a bonus offering, here's a shot of me in the 40's style "Tribute to Carmen Miranda" performance I did a few weeks ago. I designed the costume (from a 1940-something Egyptian movie clip), my best friend(s) made the costume and I made the hat (with a little help from a theater friend). I love it so much, I want to be buried in it!

This made me so happy! Thank you for sharing. I love Carmen Miranda and went has her for Halloween when I was 10 years old. Used my grandmothers plastic fruit--grabbed it right off the dining room table--for my headdress. Grounded for a week, but totally worth it.

Evening ladies!

By my joining date, I'm not new. Buuuut, when you consider the fact that life has taken me away for almost a year and I have not had the chance to post, I might as well be.

I am 22, living in wonderful and lively Sin City. I was born and raised here, and people say it shows. I have always been interested in all things vintage, starting somewhere in the early twenties and ending early sixties.

I am married, no kids, and work as a housekeeper in the Tropicana. It is one of the few casinos left in Las Vegas that still has that vintage feel, and I adore working there! I am saving money to go to nursing school.

I love knitting (crochet works too!), reading, listening to music, and playing with my hair. I also enjoy writing and graphic design.

Hopefully, I will gain some knowledge about vintage living and style, as I have been out of the loop for a while. I also hope to make some friends in the process. See you gals around, and have a swell night!

Newbie from Chicago!

Hi, all -

I have finally started posting, after lurking for many months. A few things about me:

- I'm originally from Iowa, but I moved to Chicago 2 1/2 years ago.
- I'm 27, married to a former Marine, I have 2 cats and my baby, my Great Dane (he's 17 months), and also an Australian Kelpie.
- I'm a "girl friday" presently temping, but actively job hunting.
- I'm just recently into vintage - probably within the last year or so - my focus being the late 40's, early 50's. I have the basics of hair/makeup down, but I'm still learning, and I love it.
- I have a small collection of pinup girl and Bettie Page items - they're all just so pretty and glamourous. And Bettie almost always looks like she's having fun.
- I have very few vintage pieces (unfortunately), but I am working on cultivating my collection.
- I am an Anglophile, having lived in England for a short while about 7 years ago. I miss it terribly!
- My passion is cooking - I really enjoy it, and I'm always looking to try new things. I broke away from strictly following recipes awhile ago and I mostly "freestyle" in the kitchen. Although, I kinda stink at baking...must improve.
- I'm a member fo the Good Eats Fan Page - we all love the Food Network show, Good Eats, as well as the host (Alton Brown) and his general methodology of mixing science with food. Makes you think, and it's really improved my cooking.
- I also like to write, and I'm semi-working on a novel, set in London.
- I'm interested in performing in general. I was heavily into acting in high school and college, and I miss the stage with a growing fervor. I've just become interested in burlesque performing, and I've developed a loose relationship with the local "wenching" society (the loud, marauding, corseted women at renaissance faires).

That's about all I can think of for now..
