Welcome, all!

I'm fairly new here too, and I just wanted to welcome all the other new gals.

VargasGal - it's good to see another Hoosier in the Powder Room! :)

Tough Cookie, that's a great photo! Not just the outfit (spectacular) - the energy and spirit in it as well.

The folks here are so welcoming! I posted a g'day the other day when I joined, but suppose I didn't say too much about who I am other than expressing a burning passion for history...

I'm 33 years old, and work as an assistant to the director of a national museum (if you can call doing a job you'd pay to do "work"). I was born in London during one of my father's diplomatic postings, and during my childhood lived in Australia, New York and Singapore. As an adult I lived and worked in London for five years.

I love vintage both for its inherent aesthetic qualities, and also because it provides an evocative and (if authentic) even tangible link to history. I love rich colours and fabrics. I'll freely and cheerfully admit that the 1920s I construct around me probably have as much in common with the 'real' 1920s as the Victorian medieval revivalism of the pre-Raphaelites had with the middle ages (well...perhaps a bit more authentically sourced than the works of Rossetti, Morris et al!). I like knowing about what is 'authentic' and the negative and positive, but what I choose to incorporate into my life is the essence of the best of the era.

Erm...if that makes any sense!

My work overlaps with my private hobby, which has a focus on the British mercantile marine of 1890 - 1930, particularly White Star Line history. I write the odd article for specialist and hobbyist magazines in the field.

I also enjoy scuba diving and have a particular soft spot for sharks and rays - elasmobranches.

Howdy!

I've been reading this board on a regular basis for quite some time now, and decided it was finally time to join! I'm a 23-year-old girl who's been fascinated by the past for as long as I can remember. My personal favorite eras for clothing and style are the 1950s and early '60s; I know this board is more '30s and '40s-centered so I hope you won't hold it against me ;)

Anyway, I love seeing a board for vintage enthusiasts which is so active and interesting, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading and contributing to the posts here!

Thank you, Lady Day for starting a new "newbies" thread! Welcome to all the gals. Please take a moment to view our Powder Room FAQ (a sticky near the top of the forum). Thanks and welcome again!

Love the photo, Tough Cookie!

Liz, I'm very interested in the '50s and early '60s myself - it's definitely the era I'm channeling (er, in more of a "vintage inspired" sort of way) for my wardrobe at the moment.

Im with grace on this one - I just jumped on in and posted (after lurking for a long time and having a tussle with AOL to let me join!)

Im in UK and love all things glamourous.

I've always dressed to kill to go out but I used to be one of those to surpress my sense of style in my everday goings on - for some reason it used to upset people I worked with because they felt "scruffy" (their problem not mine).

Maybe its getting older and wiser but I am me and I will be me forever now ;)

Okay the "other" stuff - I married to a man who is in the Army (its our 11th anniversary next month) we have a 10 year old daughter who follows her mother's sense of style (thank goodness) and is a proficient singer and dancer.

I have a deaf persian cat that I rescued when we were living in Germany and a Great Dane who is a big doofus!

Well thats me in a nutshell

:D

Hi Kim! Normally I would look in your profile to see where in Indiana you are from, or would have sent you a private message, but for some reason the board won't let me! Maybe it's because I'm still too new or something? Anyway, where in IN are you?

HI all

I am new here as well and have already managed to ask a few questions that got me some wonderful answers. I am 30 and I live in Surrey BC Canada. I have always loved history and definitely wish that everyone could go back to wearing beautiful clothing and hats and gloves and actually having a little bit of politeness. Anyways, thank you to all of the ladies for making me feel so welcome...:)

I'm up north - about 2 hours north of Indianapolis, and about an hour south of South Bend. I always get excited to find other people from Indiana on any of the boards I frequent! :)

Greetings ladies!

I have been posting all over the place but not really that much about myself, so I guess here is the place!

I'm a Kiwi from New Zealand, been living seven and a half years in England just south of London. I have danced all my life and started Swing dancing when I came to London. Through that I met loads of wonderful people and got into Living History, doing WW2 and now 1930s! The BF also loves this crazy stuff and we spend most weekends hunting for new acquistions

I have always loved 'dressing up' - part of being a dancer I guess - and I love, Love, LOVE Vintage clothes with a passion. And all the accessories. I was lucky enough to get my first vintage stuff from my Nana, although how any of it fits when she was 5' 1" and I am 5' 9" is a small mystery. When she died I also inherited lots of household stuff that I one day hope to have a
home of my own to put it all!!! I don't wear actual vintage all the time. I'm afraid of wearing it out, plus I am a bit of a purist as I have to have everything right top to toe to feel happy :)

I also knit and sew when I get a chance. My latest project is a jumper for the Boy for Christmas. This makes many people think I am like a young old lady, but I have never cared what people think about this sort of thing. I am very glad there are lots more people like me who wish for a return to an era of style, elegance and good manners.

See you all round!

Miss Sis aka Simone.

hi everyone. i'm pretty new here and just have to say i love this site!!! i'm so glad i came across it. i live in the bay area and i'm 23 with a one year old little boy and i just recently started adding vintage pecies to my wardrobe. and although i cant dress it often ( i work at a machine shop with a bunch of boys) i do dress vintage on the weekends and as much as i can. i want to start sewing although i dont have much time for it. my dream is to be a housewife and raise the kids like all the ladies in the 40's - 50's. my boyfriend of 7 years is going to school for graphic design and is pretty good at it to! so hopefully in the near future he will be the only one working! anyway my rant has gone to long. thanks for adding this thread!

Hi ladies!!

I actually posted in my very own introductory thread, before this lovely one was made! So I suppose I'll just copy and paste what I posted there, right here!

My name is Madison. I'm 18 years old, I've been interested in joining for some time, and my boyfriend is actually part of the Fedora Lounge already (Mr. Maltby, I'm sure you'll see him around there), and I'm so happy I finally did it, and just joined!

Currently, I'm working full time so I can save up to move to LA and go back to beauty school (I went for almost five months a while back, and unfortunatly had to drop out....beauty school dropout :D ). I love all things vintage, but I am more drawn to the late fifties early sixties, the Jet Set/Rat Pack era, but I am not at all interested in the fashion or lifestyles of the late sixties, past about '63 (hippies and things, if you know what i'm talking about). I know alot of the ladies here like the earlier years, but I'm thrilled to hear that Fancy Mouse and Liz are interested in the same era I am, and would love to talk with you girls more about it! I love thrift stores, and I'm honestly addicted to ebay, I'm sure a few of you ladies know how I feel.

I believe thats it! I'm excited to start posting and reading more in this community!

I feel the same way, sometimes I feel all alone out here! I moved to Indy this past summer, and since I work as a nanny I don't exactly meet people my own age to make friends with!

Yay, another late '50s/early '60s fan! I just love everything about this era so much -- from the incomparable mid-century furnishings to the ultra-feminine clothing and hairdos to the fantastic late '50s/early '60s music. I totally agree with you about everything post '63 -- that's the cut-off point for just about everything I collect. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people think the '60s were all about hippies and such. As we know, the early '60s were nothing like what was to come later! Anyway, I better stop myself now -- I could keep writing about this stuff all night! I look forward to chatting with you more, and let me know if you've learned any good bouffant tips from beauty school! ;)
