New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

This is the natural progression, I think, of many of us. It starts with one or two vintage pieces and then one day you seriously evaluate your entire closet because it just doesn't match where your head is going. Definitely post some of those tuxes. :)

Very bad pictures, someday I’ll have a dress up picture day and do them right.

A Dior SB PL with flat front trousers (slim fitting, very Bond), Aboud shawl collar, ? DB PL, Brooks Bothers Tails, Aboud notched lapel, Ralph Lauren PL grosgrain in black velvet (my Casino Royale Le Chiffre tux)
Not in the picture is a Brooks Bothers SB PL.

I will probably only wear the Dior and the Ralph Lauren Velvet ones. Maybe someday I’ll have a reason to wear white tie but the others I only got because they were decent quality, cheap, and the fit. If I ever find myself lucky enough to need to wear tuxedos on a regular basis I’ll mix it up a bit.

I’ve been very lucky to have run across both a Beautiful Chesterfield and an Inverness Cloak with removable velvet collar (had to have a new collar made as it came without, but had the snaps hidden under the collar). I got the cloak from Japanese ebay, I guess they wear them with kimonos still.

I like this picture ( I also have correct grey leather gloves now also)

The Dior with a waist coat, I've decided don’t like this look.
DSC07017b.jpg

In the end I spent more on shirts, shoes, etc than on the tuxedos themselves, but they really make a huge difference in how it all comes together. The only things I still want are bowties and cumberbunds made to size without adjustments. Oh and maybe some really slick Casino Royale suspenders. Oh I guess there is more, I have never found actual white linen handkerchiefs.

I ordered the homburg and the beaver top hat without knowing much and they are 1/8 too small. Oh well, someday I’ll get new ones.

Since I've cut >4" off my waistline in the last 6 months I'll have to get everything re-tailored when I get home. It will cost a bit but be so worth it as IMO nothing looks better than a slimmer tighter fit in black tie.

Theremin—Theatre

and greetings from sunny california! i've been a side-watcher of this here forum for a long time and decided to join when i realized that i have had far too many old-timey quandaries that went unanswered because lack of folks with the same interests. so here i be.

i direct/design/write for the stage and my day job is managing a theater company in downtown los angeles. i have a fantastic hubby whose life is 60s subculture (skinhead/mod/northern soul) and a 5 year-old kiddo who is just the knees of bees.

i love art deco, steam punk, beats and gibson girls. i adore vintage and DIY home furnishings...i'm a tambourine beating accordion player in training and a tap lover. i'd really love to learn how to play the theremin and saw in the near future...i'm in awe of the sea and her mysteries (octopi in particular). fave color is black and i love the smell of coconut and sandalwood (mixed together). i drink a lot of bourbon with ginger ale.

i'm a mover and shaker, shaker and mover and glad to be here.

I read your interesting introduction of yourself. As a theatre professional & theremin lover, you should definitely have a look at the home page of the Danish performance theatre Hotel pro Forma

I've been looking for this thread! Suffice it to day it didn't immediately dawn on me to check the Observation Bar for a welcome mat.

Greetings, all. I originally hail from the far east (though my current residence falls in Hollywood North). My love of vintage fashion stems from a love of vintage music, of whom Bing Crosby just happens to be my favorite. My grandfather was originally a singer who preferred Crosby music from the musicals of the period, and I've sought to (albeit amateurishly) follow in his footsteps. There seems to be a rising preference for variations on vintage american fashions in the eastern Homelands, especially amongst the Asian youth, though the Canadian west coast seems to be slow to catch on.

I currently work as a business analyst fresh from school, and spend my free time as an amateur artist whilst hunting down vintage hats in the grain of Sinatra and Crosby. Hopefully the other Canadians (particularly the West Coast ones) can point me towards more hat stores near Vancouver, as I'm currently in the market for a good Panama.

I'm looking forward to absorbing as much of the ambiance of the forums as I can, and hopefully, make a few contributions here and there.

Thanks Widebrim for the welcome. I appreciate finding a forum that's full of like-minded individuals, as DapperChris stated. I hope to contribute at some point, but loving the education I'm already receiving in the threads.

Hello all. Newbie here. I found the fedora lounge over the years while searching for specific information on historical/vintage clothing. Since I was a kid I loved historical costumes. Sewed all my Halloween costumes from scratch and played in a lot of theater with even more costumes! I didn't realize adults dressed up until I started vintage dancing (Victorian and later) and attended themed balls and reenactor events. I live in the great wild west of Nevada where most events involve late Victorian/gold rush costuming. I started a costume society and now we attend all sorts of events in costume from Renaissance to Regency to Rockabilly. I met my fiance at a dance and quickly discovered he loves historical clothing too (a match made in heaven.) Now I am learning all about more recent eras of vintage clothing for both men and women. I used my frustration with the lack of historical clothing information and buying options online and started a blog/shopping website as well as write ebooks on vintage fashions by era. The first book is out and covers 1940's women fashion. Next book will be on the 1950's.
I am intimated by all the knowledgeable people in this forum. I write from mostly a beginners stand point since that is more or less what I am. I like to raid thrifts stores and create historical looking clothing from ever day modern clothes. Sometimes I am lucky and I find vintage clothes (usually mens.)

I look forward to spending more time in this forum learning and sharing. Cheers! Debbie

Hey ya'll :D
Mitch here, didn't think to look for a welcome wagon til now! I've been browsing the site for awhile, decided to finally join so that I can get to know some of you lovely people, as well as get some tips and inspiration.
I don't necessarily reflect it in my everyday life, but I have a soft spot in my heart for things from bygone eras. My tastes run from the jazz age to early goth rock, way back to neoclassicism, Rococo, and Victorian and fast forward to cyber-culture and futurism (including retro-futurism of course!).

Hope you all enjoy your week, make an adventure of it!

Hey everyone! I've been lurking for a few months and have been blown away by the knowledge of all the members here. Looking forward to posting some more. My collection is just starting out, but my favorite is my Christmas present: an acorn Stetson Carson.

Hey hello Loungers!

I've been hanging around for a while and have not been polite enough to introduce myself. Time to correct that.

My name is David and I'm an expat Brit living in the tundra of New Hampshire. I'm a sales/marketing dude and also have a wedding and portrait photo business.

I found TFL while searching for info on peacoats. Strangely enough, I now spend most of my time in the Hat Forum and I have some nice projects going with a couple of the brilliant custom hat makers I found here.

There is just so much great info here on the forum, I'm enjoying absorbing it all and hope to be able to learn enough to contribute myself at some point.

Anyway, I'm happy to be here and have the chance to make the acquaintance of some very nice people!

Hey there!
I found this forum searching for something I can't remember now, vintage clothing info I believe.
I'm a college graphic design student, I recently got into the 1940s over the last few years. It started with records and a getting a record player and now I'm outright obsessed! I have a girl crush on Rita Hayworth, I don't know very many classic films but i do enjoy them and have been expanding my horizons. I've been a lover of antiques my whole life. I'm in awe of the glamor and class of the 1940s ladies, and while I don't own any vintage clothes yet, I browse them frequently and would love to wear swing dresses and heels everyday, I do enjoy styling my hair and makeup in vintage fashion though. I don't really know anyone else who shares my interest, so it's nice to find this forum. It is especially odd being a college student with this interest as most of my peers dress poorly and are interested in nothing but drama. My boyfriend is a civil war reenactor, which led me to find a interest in the Victorian era, and then mingling with other people interested in the past I found my heart was in the golden era.

I have to apologize for not finding this thread sooner.

I'm actually quite amazed that I only found The Fedora Lounge recently- somehow I have managed to miss this place before. I have had a love for the golden Era since I was a little child- I have always loved how people looked in them. I have always had a "vintagy" feel to my wardrobe and in the past few years that streak has grwon stronger and stronger. Last year I made a concious decision to steer my wardrobe in that direction. I sew, so even if I rarely find vintage clothes that fits me, I can create a wardrobe anyway. This decision led me to the project that led to the websearch that led me here; I'm on a four-year plan to create a 1940's wardrobe, using the directions and suggestions for a well-coordinated wardrobe given in a book from 1944. I look forward to hang around here to get additional inspiration!

I'm Swedish, so please excuse my English if it's faulty at times. Apart from sewing I have a big interest in history and I read just about everything.

Kirstenkat I'm all with you in regard of Rita Hayworth. I have been in awe of her since I was four and saw a picture of her from Salome. :)

Well hello. This is actually my second post here and was directed to this thread from my first. The name's Steve Danielle. I’m currently serving in the US Navy going on 8 years now. I found a lot of my searches leading me to this sight. I love anything vintage and enjoy the styles from the '30's through the 50's. I wish folks these days would carry themselves with pride the way people did through those years. It didn't matter what social class you were from, it seems the gentlemen and ladies took the time to make themselves presentable and that's what brought me here to the realm of individuals who still care.
Enough of my rant.
I love old cars and am currently working on a '67 Chevy pickup (Not as old as I would like, but I couldn't bare to see it die so I gave it a home). I am looking forward to socializing with the people here and picking up knowledge from folks who are so much more cultured than I. Thanks for reading!

Nice to meet you all! My Dad loved old racing cars and with a surname like Nash, he (so the story goes) promised that his first son would be called Fraser :) as a homage/nod to the car. I'm so glad I found this place - it's like coming home.

Great name, FN, and welcome to the Lounge! I would love to have an early-'50s Nash or Fraser (but not the Henry J). Oh, and there's a student at our school whose name is Hudson Buick...

Hey pullin up to introduce myself and tell ya a lil bit bout myself..

My name is Ace Hartmann.. Ive been on the lounge a few times usually directed here while searchin for somthin online and just now decided to join. Want to meet others that hold the great heart of the old skool ways. My freashman year of Highschool (2001) i got into Rockabilly music and all, yeah i was a greaseball, and since then got deeper and deeper into history which got me into loving the swing, gangster, films, the way of life. I dont wear costumes, im not heading to a party, this is a lifestyle!! I take it as serious as the Good book itself! I used to go lookin for "vintage" clothing but gave up 1. because most places treats clothing as antiques and charges an arm and a leg 2. its not bout the year of the clothing as much as its bout the heart. I think i can shop at zootsuitestore.com buy threads and be fine. I love music. Im a musician workin on gettin my music together, hard when there isnt alot of cats wantin to bring the life of swing back.

I wanna meet others in my same state.
I wanna learn and connect with others on here.

I'm new as well and have been asked to visit this thread. Am I in trouble?

I'm Heather, from Houston, Texas and my era of interest is the 40s and 50s. I found FL while searching numerous things over the years and have lurked on occasion. However, I got really into the Saddle Shoes thread and joined shortly after (after I scored some bucks on eBay for $12, thanks to the ladies of FL.) None of my friends/family are interested in vintage so I joined this site hoping to make some new "friends" and get advice, which there is plenty to go around 'round here. This is a great group of people!

Welcome to all the new members! As you post keep in mind that 15 posts is a milestone and will open up some areas to you such as the ability to send and receive PM's (private messages).

The events area is a good one to check now and again to see what is going on.

Enjoy!
