Hi there,

I've been popping in and out of here for a while and finally found the time to do the two things I've been meaning to for ages: start a blog and sign up on here. I'm an English teacher living in Sheffield at the moment and moving to London in the summer. And if this were Mastermind, my specialist subjects would be David Niven and the films of Humphrey Jennings :)

It's lovely to finally become acquainted!

Hello:)

Hello all:) I'm a married mother of 4 living in country New south wales,Australia.
I have always loved vintage things & old movies ever since i was a little girl,in fact Tyrone Power was my childhood crush :) .
I have often enjoyed reading through the threads on here but for some reason never thought of joining until the other day when i commented to my husband about how we had lux & cashmere bouquet soaps here but that it was harder to get them in the U.S.He said "Did you tell them you could get the soaps for them?" I said i'm not actually a member ,he said "why not?" so here i am lol.
I dont always have the opportunity to dress vintage but i try to whenever i can.I'm not an expert by any means ,i just buy, watch & wear what i love & try & educate myself along the way:)
Looking forward to getting to know you all better :)

:) :) :) :) :) Hi you all! I am so super excited to be finally able to post. I have long been fascinated with the 1940's as well as the other era's gone by. As I child my favorite thing to do was to read the stack of my grandmother's reminisce magazine http://www.reminisce.com/Default.asp?r_d=y I have always wanted to dress in 40's garb, but have been chicken. Ever since I found out that I was related to Jayne Mansfield (ok not exactly 40's and I'm related by my paternal grandmother was a Palmer, 2 cousins, geneology is so cool) I have had a new found determination to try it out. I have been researching for a couple weeks on hair etc and decided to give a try the other day when my husband took me out to lunch. It was awesome, not only was my car door opened for me each time, but I was treated like a lady by him and every one else I came in contact that day. Love it!!! I'm never going back! So thanks for letting me join!

Howdy everybody!

I'm a college student in my 20s, set to graduate in about two weeks and looking fearfully to the slim job market that awaits me!

I was first drawn to this site a few years back after I obtained my first fedora. I was in a thrift shop in New York City where I picked up a $40 fedora that I've been able to label as a Dobbs Jet 707 (thanks to this site, actually!). Upon graduation, I've decided to give myself a "treat" with a new fedora and, after checking this place out, thought it seemed pretty cool!

Greetings all! After fighting (metaphorically) with my computer, the internet, the att support center (all 3 people I spoke with!) and everything in between since I discovered this lovely lounge at the beginning of this week, I'm finally here. I'm a lover of vintage, as you may have been able to discern from my presence here. My era of choice for clothing is 70s--I've fallen for my fair share of Gunne Sax prairie dresses and wear them and my other maxi dresses frequently. My largest collection is vintage handkerchiefs--printed florals are always a favorite but I'm beginning to get a feel for what is common and unusual themes with time. I also have a fondness for collecting yukata, peignoir sets (60s styles), gloves and various other beauties. To follow my collections in detail, please follow the link in my signature to my blog. Things have been quite slow this week as I've been clearing away the clutter in my room (as a chronic collector it's hard to keep things in order).

If you need me, I'll be in the darkroom. Please remember not to turn on the light.

Hello, my name is Ashley. I've long been interested in old fashioned things of all sorts. Maybe my first true passion in life was cross stitch in the seventh grade, followed by black and white darkroom photography at 16. I shoot on my dad's old Pentax K1000--he lent it to me for my first photography class and has not even touched it since! I think he officially gave it to me two years ago! lol I now hope to incorporate both these loves into my future career. I am an avid collector of many things vintage and/or foreign and/or strange. To follow my collections, please check out my blog anytime you are free. By far my largest collection is my vintage hanky collection. I have over fifty now and always keep one on me (even if that means I have to keep it in my bra!). As for clothing, my taste is vintage but more modern than I think is the norm here, I am fond of the 70s maxi dresses (particularly Gunne Sax prairie dresses). I someday wish to own a CAMP corset of my very own. My first love was Jareth from Labyrinth. I'm delirious from lack of sleep, I should go before I say something stupid.

If you need me, I'll be in the darkroom. Please remember not to turn on the light.

Finally! I have been looking for "the thread" where newbies can introduce themself. So is it my turn now?

My name is Sean. I am in my late 30s and have my own business. When I am bored I like having a look at forums and when I find one that perks up my interest I join and try my best to contribute and be helpful. Well, here I am.

I am glad to be part of this growing community and glad that most people's interest here are of anything vintage. I love vintage clothing, cars and movies. Casablanca being my all time favorite movie and custom-made vintage style clothing and vintage cars among the few luxuries I allow myself.

In my spare time, I like to go fishing. I also have a thing for photography and gourmet cooking. I do watch Food Channel a lot.

So that's about all I can tell you about myself at the mo. I will try to log in more often and check all the other threads, find some interesting things to talk about.

Germany - No Country for New Hats

May I introduce myself - hope this is the right place to start.

Let me tell you the looong story how I finally ended up here and how it all started:

Nearly 37 years ago I was born in Germany and for nearly 36 years I live in the county where also Karmann got it`s roots (Beetle and Rabbit cabriolet, Chrysler Crossfire and countless more).

When I was a kid our tv was still a black and white set and we only had three channels.
In the afternoon or early everning there were a lot of old movies or tv-series (most from the US) often aimed for the younger viewers.

Many of them were silent movies or earlie talkies, so I watched a lot of films with Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Harold Lloyd, Pat & Patachon (danish duo Schenstrøm and Madsen), Little Rascals, The Stooges and many more.

I was always fascinated by the stunts, the cars, the trams and trains, the locations and of course by contemporary things - buildings, interiors, technical devices, and of course the outfits.
A man without at least headgear and a jacket wasn`t complete not to mention women with dresses and often with hats too.

So I grew up and turned into a metalhead, interests and leisure activities changed - and at a certain point you get old err get retro. ;)
You think back in the days everything was better and you start to rediscover things and look at them from a different angle.

Back in the days one of my friends was the first with a VCR (and later the first with a second VCR :D) and as teens we watched a lot of SF, fantasy and horror movies together and had lots of fun.

Someday I also bought one and later a second one but I was never a movie collector but that changed as the DVD came up.
Although I wasn´t a movie collector or enthusiast the picture quality impressed me and I bought a SCSI DVD-Rom for my PC and not much later a standalone player.

The DVD`s were expensive in the beginning so only selected movies made it into my collection but soon they were getting cheaper and cheaper and so I could expand also to the trash and retro.

So I remembered more and more movies that I saw ~15-20 or more years ago and bought and watched them again.
And sooner or later I came back to silent movies and early talkies.

Over the years the taste has been refined but also the way how you watch movies - you get more knowledge about the actors and directors, the technical side, the production, contemporary influences and so on.
And reading books about some silent movie stars also raised the interest of the early era (up to ~1950) and movies depicting those times.

And with internet, a creditcard and RC-free DVD players you can get many rare and not mainstream movies.

And last year after the worlds biggest heavy metal open air (Wacken Open Air) I saw some pics showing the top of my head and what I saw wasn´t worth to care of anymore.
It started too thin out a long time ago but now it was time to act - short and semi-bald would still look ugly so I sheared it all off.

And it didn`t took long and I bought two flatcaps thanks to the influence of the old movies.

That was step one.

Then followed step two:

A while ago a friend of mine and his GF decided to marry in a short time and then I had the problem what should I wear?

The last time I had some relatively neat clothes was back at my confirmation and in the meantime I had absolutely no use for a suit or something - that wasn´t my world.
I only wore casual/shabby/metal outfit and it was right for me.

I attended two weddings of friends before and I didn`t wore anything special except of my best pair of blue jeans a t-shirt and a regular vest.

It wasn`t a problem because my friends are also not friends of fancy clothes and the one wedding was with many guests from the countryside and the other with the majority of guests from the RPG and Live-RPG scene (that was a cool wedding ceremony on a castle - mead, costumes, playing tabletop etc).

And now on the third wedding I wanted something proper and not just appear in a black jeans and a black t-shirt - I wanted the full monty!
I immediately knew what I wanted - a mobster outfit:

- white fedora
- inkblue pinstripe suit
- black vest
- white shirt
- red tie
- red pochette
- saddleshoes

Low-key isn`t my style. :D

And while looking for those hats and shoes (how are they called, where can I get them?) I also found this nice place.

But since I`m tall (1,93m, 6`4") and I`m living in a area without a real big city nearby and I only had five weekends to shop (no time to shop during the week due to late shift work only) I ended up with this:

2yuf11h.jpg

- Mayser Fedora (Adventures of the Young Indiana Jones)
- brown suit with shadow stripes
- red silk tie
- red silk pochette
- cheap saddleshoes (had to order in UK)
- cheap classic looking watch
- tigereye cufflinks
- copper toned ring

And since the wedding was planned to be in march I also wanted a coat and a white scarf and finally found the right stuff:

2rmphjt.jpg

The coat even has removable lining. :)
In the meantime I also found a black shiny vest.

It was a real chore to find things that fit my sizes and at the style I had to make compromises.
It cost a fortune but it was worth it - my friends were totally baffled and impressed.
Now it`s my favorite dress and I look forward to find occasions to wear it.

More to come - but now it`s time to prepare for BBQ (Beer and Bratwurst in Quantities). :essen:

Welcome everyone!

When you're fully vested and all the sections are open for you, be sure to check the Events section threads regularly. You may just find an event listed where you can get together with your fellow Loungers. ALSO: If you come across an interesting event in your area that has a vintage theme consider posting it, you may just turn up some local members that would like to come.

THE BIG EVENT
One event of note coming up for May 14/15/16, 2010 is our annual get together in Southern California at that floating Art Deco jewel - the Queen Mary Hotel in Long Beach Southern California. This event brings out the locals and often long distance travelers from across the US, Europe and this year even Australia! If you go to the Steamer Trunk section you can search "Queen Mary" and view the various years postings of pictures.

We scheduled it the same weekend as the big Avalon-Catalina Dance so that people traveling for that might swing by the QM sometime. So, if time and budget allows, please join us! It's a pretty open event so come for just an hour or come for the whole weekend. It's a great time and you'll get to meet and talk to fellow minded vintage-ophiles. See the sticky for the schedule and the discusssion thread in the events section about Dinners, drinks and the effort to collect for the Band on Saturday evening.

We hope to see you there.

Howdy, all.
Native of the festering pit of trendiness known as California. Fortunately, raised by sensible Montana transplants, with their cowboy ethics, and I find that classic/ vintage clothing tends to follow the ethics and lifestyle practiced by our ancestors up until the early 60's. The last 40 or so years have been a travesty in values and style, and it's good to see there are fellow throwbacks out there, ya dinosaurs.
We lead by example.

Hello everyone :D

I just joined today, and am so excited to get to talk with all of you. I am very interested in vintage fashion, and have really enjoyed looking at everyone's pictures on this forum.

I came across this site looking for hairstyle ideas. My hair has grown almost to my waist again, and with it getting warmer I am anxiously ready to cut it all off. ;)

Looking forward to being part of the community! :)

Greetings and salutations! :) I've been lurking for about 2 weeks and finally made the plunge to join! I'm a long time tomboy/farm girl that's never even had a manicure before recently, :eusa_doh: but all through growing up until now, I've had an utter fascination with old movies, old starlets, the wartime era, and a simpler lovelier way of life. I'm going to try and leave the jeans behind and move forward to becoming a lady, and I can't wait!

Welcome to all the new girls! Great to have you all on board!
Paper Moon - lots of us are small town, farm girls - what a better foundation for the whole make-do-and-mend attitude. I still don't get manicures, but I'm so much more feminine now! Enjoy the curls and pearls!

Hi Ladies!

I've been lurking once in a while for years, and I thought it was finally time to come out of the shadows. I want, first of all, to let you know that all of you have been a real inspiration to me, and I can't wait to be a proper part of your community.

I'm interested in this forum mostly because I adore classic vintage style, though unlike many of you, my goal isn't really to reproduce the looks of the golden era to be perfectly period accurate, but to incorporate period looks to create a style that's new, uniquely me, and timeless enough that I could go back in time and not look at all out of place while not being particularly conspicuous in the present day either.

I love those icons who seem like they could have belonged to any era. I adore those like Audrey Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe, of course, but also Penelope Cruz and Kate Winslet. I take a lot of my inspiration from film noir as well as all the old dance films like the Busby Berkeley films and those fabulous flicks with Fred and Ginger. I'm a dancer myself, and i get such a kick out of those films from the days when you actually had to have solid music and dance training to get into pictures.

Anyhow, thanks so much, and I can't wait to get to know you all!

Hello

I just want to introduce myself in my first post...

I´ve done 18th century reenacting for many years and soon started to make my own garments for the hobby. My sister is a tailoress and so I had a good tuition and it appeared that I have some talents in sewing;)

I belong to the 50s Rockabilly scene for nearly twenty years now (sometimes more, sometimes less).
Over the last 6 years or so my historical interest for the 1950s ( and a bit for the WW2 era) gained and I´ve started to inform myself deeper beside the music: Design, cultur, art and... of course... clothing!
I´ve soon found out that it´s not so easy to get 50s vintage clothing for a chubby guy like me and started to make my own clothing... always on the hunt for vintage patterns, sewing crafts and fabrics :)

By now it seems that some people like what I´m doing and start to pay me for my skills.... but you can´t really call it sideline. Primarily I do it for my own pleasure... but I´m happy that I can fund my own delicacys on this way.

Over my researches I came across the Fedora Lounge for a couple of times and thought of to join the community... and so: Here I am!
