New Aero Premier Highwayman = Perfection

Hello,

I’m very pleased to announce the arrival of my custom Premier Highwayman, purchased with the invaluable help from Carrie & Wade @ Thurston Bros. I feel very fortunate to have discovered their amazing store and fit jacket process. It’s an expensive gamble ordering custom and the fit jacket process took most of the guessing out of the equation. They are true professionals and a pleasure to work with. Thanks Carrie & Wade!

I wanted to break a jacket in from scratch so CXL FQHH was the only real option as far as I was concerned. Carrie warned me about the stiffness of CXL, but I was masochistically determined to have a FQHH jacket (I was concerned Steer would be too heavy). I received a size 40 Vicenza Premier HWM fit jacket and I really liked it (those pics are posted on my other thread). It fit well, but I thought it was a little too large and so I went with a size 38 for my final order and prayed I was making the right decision. (I’ve read over and over about the unpleasantries of a too-small CXL jacket.)

When the jacket came, I took it out of the box and chuckled. It was like a 5-6lb hunk of leather armor. I’ve always wanted a suit of armor, so this was a promising start. It was gorgeous. I struggled to get it on and proceeded to do every Elvis Karate move I know, then some improvisational modern dance and finally a little Yoga (and of course some good old fashioned crumpling & rolling). I never really understood all the posts of people talking about their jackets beating them up until they broke it in enough to get the upper hand. Say no more - I get it. I will say, 1 hour of determined “abuse” worked wonders on making it more flexible. This is going to be a fun process, I can’t wait until Fall.

As this was my first custom order, I went for every option I thought I’d want. And remarkably, they all turned out great. Should I have chosen sateen over drill in the sleeves? Maybe. Should I have chosen a more exciting, busier tartan? Maybe. I definitely would not have gotten the snap on the inner left pocket. That’s going to be my glasses pocket and the button is overkill, that pocket is not opening on it’s own - but it’s all good. It is what it is and it’s perfect. (BTW, the sleeve & back length are excellent, whew :)

Which brings me to thanking above all, Julie V for her unbelievable artistry. I can’t comprehend how someone can manipulate this hide and sew with such precision, but she (and I'm sure any of the Aero Machinists), like a true artist, did and I'm beyond proud to own one of her pieces. Thanks Julie!

And of course, thanks for all of the advice and input you guys gave me - I’m already dreaming up my Vicenza Board racer which will have all the right choices. The disease has struck…

OK, enough blabbing. Bring on the Dancing Horses! (yeah, just ignore the wonky shirt collar) :(

Excellent choice in jacket and options. I didn't know it at the time, but what I really wanted the last time I had a custom jacket made was a Premier Highwayman in Black Vicenza, but the last time I ordered a custom jacket neither of those were options. I have a deep case of the envies right now. Hopefully someday in the not too distant future I'll be able to have one made up, but not this year most likely.

Good luck breaking in the CXL FQHH. I too just had to have it when I ordered my 30's half belt, but I eventually gave in and threw it in the washing machine.

Very nice jacket. That's what you call a perfect fit! Congratulations and enjoy it. Now begins several weeks/months/years of work-in to make it look as good as it possibly can. That's part of the fun, letting it relax and fit to your body; then it will look even better - believe it or not. VERY nice jacket.

Great fit! I quite like that tartan as well.

I had to double check to see whether the premier HWM came with zip sleeves as standard (which they don't). I have to say, I think I prefer the zip sleeves, great mod there.

lol I immediately did the same thing. I really dig it on this style, really adds a lot to the jacket.

Perfect all around, man! You nailed it and please don't let this one appear in the classifieds/eBay after a few months. I gotta say, I much prefer the Premier HWM. Collar is infinitely nicer and cooler, and the slanted pocket and back yoke just do so much for it.

No chance I will sell this. It has plenty of room to layer in and I love all the details (the slanted chest pocket was a mod - stock is straight). I feel blessed to own such a luxury jacket. It's hidden in my closet downstairs atm. I'm trying to figure out how to introduce my wife to it. She would flay me and make a jacket out of my hide if she had any clue what I paid for this. I'm not joking. She doesn't buy stuff (which is amazing). But she doesn't understand the price of quality either. I think I might ask Carrie to fake up some sort of a raffle email so I can say I won it! HA!

Excellent fit and taste there! It'll sell itself to your wife, Aero's are thier very own lesson in quality. I never had even heard of one until three years back when I stopped by this little store in Seattle, seeking a vintage Motorcycle jacket, (Insurrec tion). I found out about this brand. how they are made and tried on a couple of Aeros. At first I thought it was odd. Now I realize I have the disease! I love the quality and they completely sold themselves to me!

I think you summed it up best when you said 'perfect'. And doesn't it look awesome in black? On my monitor, the last pic actually looks almost blue/black. Never seen a better fit ever.

:D Yeah, I feel VERY lucky right now. I'm so pleased...

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Black it is - I had a fluorescent light on with incandescent and when I color adjusted that pic, it came out a little blue.

Really fine jacket and fit. Having enough wiggle room for a sweater is, imho, a perfect fit. I'd spring it on the wife asap because, first, she's going to smell it in no time and, second, you don't want to slink around in your own house. Now, here's a question: are you finding the CXL as tough to break in as some have said, or are you finding it surprisingly easy?

Dang- that's one beautiful looking jacket! I've always liked the idea of zipped sleeves on a Highwayman and I just don't see it too often. And the brass hardware against black horsehide is a stylish combo. And that diagonal chest pocket is a nice finishing touch! Looking forward to seeing pics of how it breaks in over the next couple of years. Enjoy!
