Need suggestions for "yard work" hat

Hi,

OK, I've got my Borsalino Traveler that is my everyday hat - I mean to wear it regularly but not beat on it. I also intend to buy a decent Panama to wear this summer.

However, what do you recommend for a yard work/weekend hat - one each in felt and straw?

I have three or four canvas buckets that I use out in the yard. They're soft, light, absorbent, and the brim is wide enough to cover almost my whole face and especially my ears.

Unlike a straw, I don't have to worry about it blowing off of my head.

Advantage to a good cotton hat for yard work is you can chuck it on the washer to clean it up. As always I would recommend a Tilley. They are designed to be washed and not shrink or loose there shape.

I've always kept three grades of hats; my dress hat, my everyday hat, and my old hats. As the best moves to 2nd grade, that pushes that down to the 3rd grade.

I recently ordered a cuenca from Panama Bob for a work hat and a monticristi for an everyday hat. The three hat system sounds good to me, but I will wait until next summer to get a better quality monticristi for dress. Both of these hats will be better than my standard summer straw hat with the green visor sewn to the front of the brim.

A cheap montecristi, or Cuenca hat. Indespensable. Felts suck in hot weather. I have a vintage Cavanagh hat, that I use for yard work. It has been around the block. I posted pics of it a couple years ago on the Lounge..people thought it was a mint vintage. It has had weed, dirt, wood chips, garden dirt, you name it on it..and it just burshes off without a care! Soaked in rain, no matter (unlike a famous east coast hatter's hats that taper like a bad dog).

Get whatever you like and USE it. That is what a HAT is FOR!

Amish straw for summer

We have an area of Amish communities in southern MN. My wife and I were down there about 10 years ago and I picked up a new, sturdy straw hat with about a 3" brim for $6. Works, feels, and looks great for around the yard.

Three options:

If it's dirty work, a baseball cap. Nothing wrong with them aside from no shade for the neck and ears.

If it's not too hat, my Open Road with a small crack in the felt. it's already dedicated to odd jobs.

If it's hot, my Panama. It's not an expensive hat, so why not?

...I've got an "Ultimate Hat" which is a Tilly competitor that I often wear when I'm kicking around the house, but it can get hot, so I'll look for an inexpensive Panama.

I use a baseball cap when doing yard work...does a great job of keeping the sun out of your eyes and is easily washable

With a little luck you can get a neat old hat off of the Ebay. Something with a little history and it shows. Plus you can get a fairly low price compared to new and it will have some charector. Don't forget an Open Road style lid with a Fedora pinch makes a great outdoors hat.

For straw the Amish hats look like a good choice, English.

If you really want to think out of the box Maybe a Pith helmet would do. There is a thread already going called "Pith Helmet" where John in Covina states he uses one when mowing lawns. He mentioned the sweat band in his is like Vinyl but the Pith helmets listed here http://www.villagehatshop.com/pith_helmet.html have leather bands so it may not be a problem. Just an idea.

I use a older Akubra Snowy River for a felt but I would recommend any wide brimmed Akubra for such a job. I have a cheep Justin cowboy hat for a straw. But I get a lot more use out of the Snowy River. Looks better beaten up and a bit easier to clean. Gardening it may get dirty. But that's just my opinion.

You know, I think I'll show you guys an oldish Stetson I have for the felt, and get a Cuenca for the straw . The Stetson is from the late 80s, I just cleaned it up, steamed the crown & ironed the brim - now I'm trying to figure out how to *shape* the brim.

I wear a wide-brim straw hat for yardwork. I don't want to sunburn my ears. But I stay out of the sun as much as possible during midday in the summer.

Don't forget sunscreen!

Hi,
I have a couple of custom fedoras, one made by someone in Va. and another by Art focett which I treasure. I also have two panama hats of different qualites as well as a Hoque beret and a newsboy cap. The hat I wear everyday is a SCALA which I wear to work and just generally just beat on. It is a fur felt hat which I assume is part mouse, muskrat, racoon and who knows what else. It is a beater and I paid about $15 on ebay and it works well for me. My custom hats work well when I take my bride out to dinner.
