Name That Tune

OK, this next one is a very specific 1936 recording of a very old song. The words quoted aren't part of the actual lyric -- but are sort of an ad-lib rhythmic spoken intro at the beginning of the record. Here 'tis --

"Yeah, look at me, look at me! I look like somethin' the cat had in the alley last night! Lemme tell you somethin' woman, you made a big fat greasy bum outta me, and I ain't goin' stand for it!"

Tsk, the level of musical education in this world is really falling off. Imagine folks not recognizing Fats Waller when he's quoted to them.

The specific record is Victor 25394, recorded August 1, 1936 -- an absolutely hysterical rendition of "The Curse Of An Aching Heart," a lugubrious barroom ballad from the turn of the century which Fats utterly deconstructs with one of his most outrageous vocal performances. Some nice work by his regular band, too.

OK, here's an easier one -- a song i've been humming all day today for some reason...

A boy would sit and fish and dream when he should have been in school -- Now, he couldn't read or write a word but happiness he found --
In a little song he heard and here's how it would sound!

Hut Sut Song

I recall reading something about the real meaning of the words. It's based on an old blues tune that somebody couldn't understand and turned into nonsense syllables. It's something like "Hot (something) on the riverboat, and his squalling, brawling Suzy". Makes sens to me.
BTW, this is off topic, but related to the overall theme of whatever . . .
I just bought a really nice FEDORA today at Bencraft Hatters in Brooklyn, (patronize our advertisers!). I love it! I'm going to sleep in it tonight! Just like my first baseball glove!

And it also sounds alot like this other song:

Hot Shot Dawson on a river boat,
With his brawlin', sprawlin' sweetie. . . .

Hot Shot is an Irish pug,
The river boat is the Queen,
His brawlin' lass is Bridget Cass
And Hot Shot is her dream.

Yeah! That's it!

What a gang we have in this joint!
I just heard an irresistible song title from Rich Conaty on his Big Broadcast show on WWW.WFUV.ORG . "Was I Drunk, Was He Handsome, and Did My Mom Give Me Hell!"
Gotta hear this.
Lizzie, he's playing your tune now, "Just around the corner . . ."

Pseudo Ink Spots

That's from the Modernaires "Jukebox Saturday Night". They do spoofs of several popular performers, including Harry James and the Inkspots. I've always assumed that when they did it live they always had many other different songs they would include.
Now I have to think of one . . . . Gimme a minute here. If anyone else feels like jumping in, please feel free!

Yikes, that lyric is almost scary...an example of what you could get away with in the 30s that you can't today. Basically, an underage girl meets a boy, gets drunk, and becomes an enthusiastic victim of date-rape.

Was the version Rich played by the Sid Peltyn (aka) Eliot Everett ork? That's the one I have - a 1932 Victor. The "Was I?" side is very well worn, suggesting it was once someone's party record. The flip is "Little Nell," a comic melodrama acted by members of Joe Haymes' band.

Hey, now, another lyric. I give you:

Not the kind to bring regret for kissing,
Not the kind to bring you pain while reminiscing...

OK, Name this Andy Razaf tune!

Why can't I forget like I should?
Heaven knows I would if I could.
But I just can't keep you off my mind.

Though you're gone, I have to explain,
all around me you still remain.
Wonder why fate should be so unkind?
