My trade bait pile of hats!

Well, with my collections constantly growing and my wife noticing "you have a lot of hats", it is getting time to perhaps at least thin some hats that do not fit and get some others that do! I have sizes 6 7/8 (from when I thought perhaps I could get my wife to wear a hat) all the way to a 7 3/4! AND I have some even marked 7 1/2 that fit like a 7 3/8......some of the very good ones are 7 1/4.....ALL but one (a true to just a little large size 7 5/8 Imperial Biltmore) are VINTAGE..........so in the next few months I will be posting some here with details and we will see what happens........;)
M:)
PS I will say I am MOST interested in a TRADE for something I CAN wear! I am not interested in something new, but prefer vintage for vintage even if I have to throw in some $ for hats in my big mellon size.....:rolleyes:;)

Interested in the light brown with the box pleat ribbon work or anything Homburgian. I am a 7 3/8 but can go to 7 1/2" But anything I have is likely to be too small for you. But there is always cash!

That one is a 7 1/4.:( It is an awsome mid 50's Stetson Royal Deluxe, and absolutly flawless save the usual foxing on the liner......No sweat stains, flawless supple felt....
It is a 2 1/2 inch overwelt with a 2" BLUE/BLACK ribbon.......it looks homburgian just because of the centerdent crease, but it is very much a fedora......if it fit me I would NEVER let it go......

Here are pictures of my 10X Velour Thoroughbred. Really nice soft dense felt! Tagged size 7 1/4 is is a nice example of this early 50's style.......3 3/8 inch overwelt brim, 4 inch crown as bashed. This one reminds me of a good old fashioned Spanish or Plains western. This is an unusual find in the 10X velour finish and heavy silver metalic through the 3 cord, and has good roan sweat and of course an awsome red lining to boot!!

Is there a way to drop threads one starts?
I am done.........I want to remove all my threads.......
Tired of people buying hats that don't fit and then ruining them forever. I like the history I thought I found here.......but as Jack has said it IS just a fashion show with people who don't give a damb............and just want to aquire, or sell for as much as they can, to other people who don't give a damb either...............

Sounds like you’ve had some bad experiences lately; I’m sorry about that. I can only imagine what seeing something your passionate about fall into the hands of those who don’t appreciate them the way you do.

I can see the fashion show mentality. I can also see the elitist who are rude and disrespectful to others who don’t see the world exactly as they do (this certainly isn’t you!). The Lounge has changed since its inception as an Indiana Jones club offshoot. It’s also going to continue to evolve. No one is going to like all the changes, I know I don’t. I think what we will always need are those knowledgeable folks who can with gentleness and reasoned persuasion teach the newer generations appreciation for vintage items. People usually want to learn if they are approached right. They might come at first for the “fashion” but folks like you can help them to really appreciate hats. Some others here are too caustic, abrasive, argumentative, and condescending to be effective teachers to newcomers...but there are others who don’t feel the need to always be right and who can accept other points of view from their own who can guide new members. I’ve certainly learned a lot from you and I save your old catalog and advertising and reference it often as I continue to learn and develop my appreciation of hats. Because of people like you, I’m much more circumspect about permanently altering any hat...my rounding jack is gathering dust.

I hope you hang in here. Your contributions are irreplaceable.

The lounge has changed drastically when I was first a member years ago. No longer do I see many vintage hat enthusiasts posting. In fact, a lot of those members no longer post at all. Sadly, I don't post as much as I used to, as I am here for the historic side. I love the old hats, and with those appearing less and less, and threads I bump recieving little to no interest, I mainly lurk in the background and appreciate posts from afar.

I too am tired of seeing hats destroyed, especially when it comes to the old ones, pre-1950s, as that is what I collect. If they don't fit me, and I am unable to shim it to fit, I sell it. No sense in destroying something that others seek just to add another hat to a grouping that resembles every other one that was also disected and redone. At that point, a custom hatter would be much more benificial than destroying historic items. At one point, I did support that, as I thought the process was amazing. But after seeing many results of the prior and post, and they all almost look the same, they are no longer a "whippet, gamebird, playboy, stratoliner, etc". They are a hat that has been pushed too far and has lost it's individuality. At that point, those designations mean zero.

I’ve thought a lot about why the Lounge has changed. I don’t know that I have any answers. I image that the changes were gradual with one type of member replacing another. I spend hours reading those old posts, and it doesn’t take long to see that they had the same types of members as me ten years ago but the ratios were different with a greater propensity for the scholarly aspects. I enjoy them all

For me personally, I’m mostly only interested in the hats that I can also wear. At my size, vintage are rare and I would be relegated to a passive observer rather than a contributing participant if the Lounge remained overwhelming about vintage hats. I’d also bring it to the attention of some members that westerns, other than true vintage hats, were not found on the old Lounge. Neither were trips to distilleries etc. The Lounge has grown and evolved and it continues to do so.

I’m sad that the Lounge has moved in a direction that has made many of the old knowledgeable members feel out of place. I like a diverse cross section, and the brain drain is noticeable (I’ll never come close to filling the shoes of those members). I regret the change while also acknowledging that I’m a part of the cause of it. Am I supposed to abstain because I don’t fit the mold of the golden era of the Lounge? I like it better where we all contribute and we all ignore those threads or postings that we don’t like. If you aren’t interested in pre-1940s dress hats or dating a pre-War Dobbs by its liner, or the newest polypropylene Akubra you can just ignore those threads/posts. What I don’t like is that so many of the most knowledgeable members have stopped posting. I don’t know what the answer but I know it isn’t for even more of them to leave.

I could speak of my feelings or observations as to the nature of the lounge present and of bygone posts. Some might call them the good old days. But in the end i can only be me and expect and hope other’s are as well. I’ll respect the nature of the lounge for what it is.
A gift free of charge, enjoyed by many and ever changing as are the many diverse and interesting members of a family.
Some rough, some polished some lost like me but all finding new friends that help make life alittle more joyfull.
I just try to remember....today is tomorrow’s good old days!! That helps.
Thanks All. Bowen

I think a lot of what is going on with the lounge is the sheer monopoly of certain threads by a handful of members who are constantly bantering back and forth, filling pages without contributing anything other that oohs and aahs, cheerleading and butt kissing without contributing anything of substance. Look at some of the recent members join date and the number of posts attributed to them. They must not have any restrictions on their device time at home.

The first western post on this site was 2007 and it's called "Western Anyone? The thread didn't specify anything about the hats being vintage and what in the world does a trip to a distillery have to do with the price of eggs in China. That can only be construed as a dig at a particular person or party. Quite petty.

The lounge has grown. Certainly in membership but I'm not sure I would call that growth, other than in population. Evolution, sure things change and this place is no different. What it's not is Facebook, or it least it didn't use to be and sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference.

I've seen discord on the lounge before but nothing quite like this. I know where it comes from and the underlying causes. Those that don't, .....

Greg, I see that you deride personal attacks then make some of your own (no restrictions on device time at home). Yes, I made some comments pointed at a particular member because that member has both made pointed comments of his own and because he has been mentioned as one of the cheerleaders for lamenting about the direction of the Lounge.

I’ve never been on Facebook so I don’t get your reference, but form context I assume you don’t like it. It seems that it is a popular creation...for a reason?

What I don’t get is why anyone would care about someone else’s oohs and aahs. If you don’t care for them ignore them. I can’t get why this is such a hard thing to do?

Was your comment on a few members monopolizing threads aimed at Hats and Drinks, a Match Made in Heaven? I keep seeing the same very few members posting there? There’s no monopoly here, everyone can post as little or as much as they want. If this is not what the Lounge wants it’s simple to limit the number of posts from a member. If you don’t like banter then ignore it.

As for posts that don’t contribute anything, you’ve made them too. We all have. How many times do we need to see the same hat photographed, even an exceptional one? What does that add to the Lounge? Is your argument that you and your’s “kiss butt” and “cheerlead” but not to excess? I can recall lots of ohs and aahs over a Churchill or a Dorer. It’s a strange argument for you to make.

I’m sorry you didn’t get the “distillery” comment. My point was that a long essay on alcohol distilleries has nothing to do with hats and despite others making the thread in the hats forum and posting to it it still has nothing to do with hats. Why is it in the hats forum? I had no interest in the essay so I skipped it. I ignored it. I don’t care that it’s there because I’m not forced to read it. I don’t want it removed and I don’t rant that it’s there; I only use it as an example of material I don’t care about so I ignore it.

I’ll add that there is a very useful feature that lets you ignore members you select. You never have to see their postings. Better yet, when you use the Tapatalk app You can still see their photos without having to read their comments. I’ve made use of it and it’s made my Lounge experience better.

As for Mark, he’s a treasure. He adds so much, and so much that no one else can. I’d hate to lose him.

I appreciate the conversation my postings first-half created.

But the bigger issue here, which I addressed in the second half, is the destruction of vintage hats which is bothering the OP to the point of wanting to leave permanently. The destruction which is being so heavily supported every time it occurs, it fuels the fire and it happens again and again.

I completely understand why OP is extremely bothered by it, as myself and I know other collectors and vintage lovers are too.

I said it once. i'll say it again. Hunting for a grail hat is all good and well, but when you find one, have it pulled apart and blocked up 3 or 4 sizes, it is NO LONGER the hat you were seeking. It's a custom hat using vintage felt. That's it, regardless of keeping the sweatband or liner in it. it no longer is a whippet, flagship, game bird, 100, etc, as the blocking and flange that gave that hat it's name is removed completely.

Ever hat I've seen with this method ends up looking the same. No vintage look at all. I have tried saying to just go the custom route because at the end of the day they are hats, yes. But destroying things that others seek for days/weeks/years (especially ones that are NOT being produced anymore and carry hat history), just to say you have another hat to your hat group is ridiculous.

One more time, you don't have a hat you've hunted for, you have a custom hat wearing another hats name. That hat is only named after a vintage model by the felt it is made from. that's it.

I got the distillery comment as well as most others you make, taking half a page to make a simple comment. That's a personal attack. I didn't make a personal attack earlier, there's a enough of what I said to cover quite a group.

I know who you were referencing in your cheerleading comments, everyone does. Much of the lamenting has gone on privately because many have just decided to step away or discuss it privately while hoping the lounge will move in a different direction. I've got my doubts.

You're right, I don't have to read posts. What I do have to do is scroll through the ones I don't want to read to find the hidden gem.

Yes, I happen to own a few hats that others find interesting. I appreciate their oohs and aahs. I always try to remember to say thanks. My arguments are not what's strange, it the density of those that fail to get them.

Yes, we've all made silly innocuous remarks on threads but I like to think of them as the exception instead of the rule as some here do.

Brent, I know very well how to ignore someone on this site, but thank you for pointing that out. Your childishness is exceeded only by your overwhelming compunction to post.

I didn't plan on posting again but feel I need to defend myself after being called out by Handsome.

Funny thing, Bowen posts to Mark:

"1. Author some threads that allow your passion to grow and draw likeminded members and influence potential new ones. Construct it to your liking by defining it’s goal and direction."

Yet when one does have passion for what was they are accused by Handsome of lamenting or crying about the direction of the Lounge. And if you think the Lounge should just be another Facebook then you knew nothing about the Lounge when you joined. Sort of reminds me of the woman who goes into a relationship thinking she can change her man to what she wants. No matter how hard you try I don't think your "favorite" wool hat from LL Bean will draw much interest in a new thread on the FL.

Everyone knows this place is being overrun by leather jackets; just check the Classifieds. I've got no problem with those who like leather jackets or 2nd hand vintage suits & thrift store clothing, but there are plenty of sub forums for that. Use your favorite in your avatar, but why does the hat forum need to be overrun & turned into a fashion show? Use the hat forum to document your vintage or custom hat.

The "Hats and Drinks..." thread was started in 2013 by Alive'n'Amplified & every post I have personally made in the thread is in line with the OP. The Distillery tour post was made in the "Fedoras Afield" thread which was started in 2013 by Lefty. How is the Distillery tour post different from posts on the Space Museum, Venice, or Trail cam creatures? Make no mistake; I enjoyed those posts but where's the thread violation with the Distillery tour? Seems to me it was posted in the appropriate thread & in line with the OP.
